EXCEPTIONAL FLEET AIR ARM DISTINGUISHED SERVICE MEDAL GROUP to Lieutenant A E Suggitt - DSM and MID for the Battle of Norway in Blackburn Skua's operating from HMS Ark Royal and HMS Furious. GVI Distinguished Service Medal; 1939 to 45 Star; Aircrew Europe Star with Atlantic Clasp; Burma Star; Defence Medal; War Medal (MID); GVI Long Service Good Conduct Medal. Arthur Edward Suggitt was born on 11th November 1908 in Hull. He volunteered to join the Royal Navy aged 16 on the 30th October 1924 as a Boy 2nd Class. He trained as a telegrapher and had reached the rank of Petty Officer when he re-engaged on 18th May 1938. He had on 27th May 1929 volunteered for service on Submarines. On the 3rd September 1939, he transferred to the Fleet Air Arm as a Petty Officer Airman. During the Battle of Norway, he was served with 801Squadron on HMS Ark Royal; the Squadron operated Blackburn Skuas. Suggitt and his Pilot Lieutenant (A) William Wallace Haig Martyn were both Mentioned in Despatched; 'For bravery and continued devotion to Duty in combating enemy aircraft:' Suggitt and Martyn undertook 19 sorties together from April 1940 to September 1940, mainly combat patrols and dive bombing attacks on shipping He noted in his log book on 17th April 1940 that while undertaking a patrol over Suffolk with Lieutenant Commander Bramwell that he shot down a Dornier Bomber. On the 23rd April after a fighter Patrol over N.W.E.F Lt Cdr Bramwell along with Suggitt had to make a forced landing at sea. Bramwell would go on to win the DSO and DSC. In September 1940 the Squadron transferred to HMS Furious, still participating in the Norwegian campaign. It seems likely that Suggitt's Distinguished Service Medal was awarded for service on Furious. The award was gazetted on 1st January 1941; "The King has been graciously pleased to give orders to the Appointments to the Distinguished Service Order, and to approve awards as shown below, for outstanding zeal., patience and cheerfulness, and for never failing to set an example of wholehearted devotion to duty, without which the high tradition of the Royal Navy could not have been upheld" HMS Furious reverted to her role as a transport ship in November 1940, and was tasked with transporting Fighter Aircraft in crates to Takoradi on the Gold Coast; Furious retained six Skua's for protection, Suggitt remained with them and flew sorties and patrols from Takoradi to protect HMS Furious. In February 1941 Suggitt was drafted to Lee - On- Solent for instructors duties. A return to operation duties came in April 194 when he based in Trinidad, mainly it was instructing duties, but he flew operational sorties in July 1941 between Trinidad and Grenada. Awarded the Long Service Good Conduct Medal 11th November 1941 - named HMS Goshawk, a base in Trinidad. From the Payment and Victual Ledgers, it confirms that he served on HMS Attacker as Warrant Air Observer between 25th January 1945 until 30th September 1945. This was likely his qualification period for the Burma Star. He served as a signallers officer and remained in the Navy in the post-war years until the mid-1950s, instructing in Observing also. The group comes complete with original service papers, photographs, insignia and copy service papers. His flying logbook is present and is his number two. Each month from April 1940 until February 1941, is signed off by the commanding officers and stamped 24th March 1941. Highly likely that his first was lost or his hours were not signed off for an extended period! He flew over 30 operational sorties from the information in his logbook and looks to have flown around 1800 hours in total. DSM = F.55136 A.E Suggitt P.O. AIR. AN IMPORTANT SINKING OF THE SCHARNHORST DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSS GROUP TO GUNNER PERCIVAL O'KELL HMS SCORPION Percival O'Kell was born in Liverpool in 1908. He joined the Royal Navy on 7th May1929, signing on for seven years. In 1934, O'kell opted for continuous service and was given number D.J.X142469. A Torpedo Gunner Petty Officer on HMS Scorpion, O'kell was awarded the DSC: 'For gallantry, distinguished service and devotion to duty on the staff of the Commander-in-Chief, Home Fleet, and in H.M. Ships Duke of York, Belfast, Norfolk, Sheffield, Jamaica, Savage, Saumarez, Scorpion, Musketeer, Matchless, Virago and Opportune during the. action in which the Scharnhorst was engaged and sunk.' The award was announced in the London Gazette on 7th March 1944. H.M.S Belfast commanded by Rear-Admiral Burnett along with H.M.S Norfolk and H.M.S Sheffield protected the convoys. H.M.S. Duke of York and H.M.S Jamaica along with four other destroyers moved into position to block an escape attempt by Scharnhorst. Early on the morning of the 26th of December Scharnhorst encountered Rear-Admiral Burnett force. They were able to hold the Scharnhorst off, and H.M.S Norfolk and H.M.S Sheffield drove her into the force of destroyers. H.M.S Scorpion working in conjunction with Norwegian ship Stroud fired 16 torpedoes at the Scharnhorst hitting her at least once. Scharnhorst was engaged again by H.M.S Duke of York, who had hit her earlier, and was finally sunk. Only 36 survivors were picked up out of a ship's complement of 1970 officers and men. Present with the group is a fascinating stack of Naval Messages. The first-page stating "H.M.S. Scorpion Battle of North Cape Boxing day 1943". The messages detail the run-up to the battle, the firing of torpedoes and survivors of the Scharnhorst being picked up.  O'Kell kept a small pocket-sized diary which is included with the group. On the last pages he writes of his experiences during the battle, ' At 1849, Range 100 Torpedo 8 in No One fired. We had the joy of seeing one hit.' Scorpion and the Norwegian ship Stroud fired 16 torpedoes at the Scharnhorst, during the action. With Buckingham Palace Investiture invitation. Condition GVF+ Swing mounted, with miniature set and Photographs of Reynolds with fellows officers John James Reynolds served with the 2nd County of London Yeomanry -(Westminster Dragoons), during the Second World War. B & C squadrons were among the first to Land on Gold Beach on D Day, tasked with removing German Mines using the Sherman Crab. Reynolds was awarded the M.B.E in large part for his role in organising the unit for Operation Overlord. The original recommendation and an overview of his career follow. M.B.E 27th March 1945 The KING has been graciously pleased to give orders for the following promotions in, and appointments to, the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, in recognition of gallant and distinguished services in North-West Europe: - Lieutenant (Quarter-Master) John James Reynolds '(257526), 2nd County of London Yeomanry -(Westminster Dragoons), Royal Armoured Corps (Windsor). 'Lt Reynolds joined this Regt in January 43 immediately on being granted his commission from the rank of RSM aster 17 years and six months OR service. At this time regimental stores and corresponding records required thorough reorganisation, and there were considerable arrears of work accumulated during the illness of his predecessor. Although without a QMS (T) for two months at this time Lt. Reynolds completed his task most successfully and from the beginning, his work in the regiment has been of the highest order. Reorganisation of the Regiment, re-equipment, mobilisation and preparation for Operation 'Overlord' all took place within a comparatively short time and resulted in an immense increase of work, a large share of which fell upon the QM. No AF G1098 was available for the Flail tanks with which the Regiment mobilised. These vehicles have a great range of special spares and equipment of which a large proportion was not issued until preparatory moves before embarkation had already begun. Reorganisation to a new war establishment in the field and the maintenance of Sqns which frequently operate more than fifty miles from the Regiment HA have made problems successfully overcome by Lt Reynolds, Whose cheerful and unsparing devotion to duty are always an inspiration to all his staff and to those who work with him. I strongly recommend him for the award of the MBE. 11th March 1947 Captain Quarter Master with seniority from 4th January 1947 27th July 1948 The War Office, 3oth July 1948 The following Officers are awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal (Military) without gratuity - i3/i8i/j Royal Hussars.
