Lot 1459

BRITISH 18th CENTURY TOKENS, London Corresponding Society, Silver Celebratory Medal, 1794, obv cock crowing, STRUCK BY ORDER OF THE LONDON CORRESPONDING SOCIETY * around, rev names of the jurymen in eleven lines, ROBT. RYDER THOS. MANLEY JOSP. STAFFORD JAMES CHABOT WILLM. HOPKINS JAMS. ALLN. DIXWELL T. NELSON J. CARRON JOHN THOMAS GEOR. HIGGENBOTTOM JOHN FARMER JOS. HARRIS, with JURYMEN in exergue, THE KING VERSUS EATON 14TH MARCH 1794 around, edge plain (D&H Middlesex 203). Trifling marks, otherwise essentially as made and attractively toned, exceptionally rare, only three examples traced in silver After the acquittal of Daniel Eaton in 1794, the Society commissioned a medal in commemoration, and appreciation of those involved. The names inscribed on the reverse were those of the jurors, the Society’s belief that “adherence to principles of reason and justice by juries does more to secure attachment to the laws than armies of Hessians and Hanoverians.” Fourteen medals in silver were to be struck with the intention of presenting them to the jurors; with two to go to Eaton’s counsel, John Gurney and Felix Vaughn. The LCS also approved the production of examples in copper and white metal, the latter intended to be sold to members at 6d each. In March of 1794 three of the silver medals were to be sent to the two members of counsel and to the jury foreman, Joseph Stafford, and were entrusted to Thomas Hardy, the founder and secretary of the LCS. Before they could be delivered, Hardy was arrested and the medals seized by the government. The medals were not returned until July 1795 and distributed shortly thereafter. It is unclear from the records of the LCS how many medals where actually struck but it is interesting to note that only three medals in silver have ever been traced..

Lot 1482

BRITISH 18th CENTURY TOKENS, William Lutwyche, Copper Halfpenny, obv man in chains, kneeling to right, AM I NOT A MAN AND A BROTHER around, the head under the space between the N of MAN and the A of AND, rev two hands joined, MAY SLAVERY & OPRESSION CEASE THROUGHOUT THE WORLD * around, large letters in legend, OPRESSION incorrectly spelled with one P, edge THIS IS NOT A COIN BUT A MEDAL (Atkins p.375, 144a; D&H Middlesex 1037a). Minor spotting, otherwise good extremely fine with some original colour remaining, rare. ex Dalton Collection

Lot 1494

BRITISH 18th CENTURY TOKENS, William Lutwyche, Copper Penny, obv crossed sword, spear and trumpet, hat and pair of spurs, SOMERSET YEOMANRY CAVALRY * 1796 * around, rev three horsemen left, THEIR TOKEN above, P . A . ET . F in exergue, edge I . . PROMISE TO PAY ON DEMAND ONE HALFPENNY .X. (Conder p.131, 11; Pye p.44, 9; Virt p.176; Atkins p.171, 21; D&H Somersetshire 24). Minor spots, otherwise good extremely fine with subdued colour remaining, rare. The Somerset Yeomanry Cavalry were formed of two corps, the “East” and “West”, both in 1794. It has been suggested that Mary Lambe & Son were the issuers of this token. It may be so, but the edge reading of a “I . . PROMISE TO PAY ON DEMAND ONE HALFPENNY . . . “ seems a bit specious since there is no indication of the issuer nor place of redemption. No similar edge appears on any other ‘Association’ token or medal (nor on any of the other tokens issued by Lambe & Son). It is, perhaps, just as likely that this is a specious Lutwyche concoction, given that the dies were used to produce a double thick token; the obverse die also muled with a West Cowes reverse (DH Somersetshire 2 and 25) initially intended for a Thomas Aryton halfpenny (see DH Hampshire 94). However, as many manufacturers seemed to have treated dies in their possession as their own (Lutwyche included) this is not necessarily conclusive.

Scattered marks and light blemishes, otherwise better than extremely fine and retaining some brilliance, rare. The Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade was formed in 1787 and disbanded after it achieved the abolition of the international slave trade in 1807. At a meeting of the Society on 5 July 1787 it was resolved that a Seal be engraved for the use of the Society and on 27 August 1787 it was further resolved that Josiah Westwood Esq. be a member of the Committee to develop the Seal. On 16 October 1787 the Seal sub-committee reported that an example of the design had been submitted “expressive of an African in Chains in a supplicatory Posture with the Motto ‘Am I not a Man & a Brother’” had been approved and will be engraved. This Seal was adopted by various sympathetic organizations and reproduced on medal and tokens in the United Kingdom and, later, in the United States. While the Society encouraged the reproduction of the Seal designed by Wedgewood, there is no indication that they issued any tokens or medals directly.
