JUAN GIMÉNEZ MARTÍN (Ávila, 1855 - Madrid, 1901)."Young saleswoman".Oil on canvas.Signed in the lower left corner.Measurements: 137 x 100 cm; 165 x 129 cm (frame).Giménez Martín began his academic training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid where he was a disciple of Federico de Madrazo, Carlos Luis de Ribera and Carlos de Haes. In 1881 he applied to the Diputación de Ávila for a pension so that he could settle in Rome. He lived in Rome from 1882 to 1886, where he became a member of the Spanish Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. During his stay in Italy he visited Florence, Naples and Venice, where he began to practise landscape painting. After settling in Spain, he took part in numerous national exhibitions, such as the National Exhibition of Fine Arts of 1876 and 1878, and the exhibition of 1881. His work was awarded several honourable mentions (1895, 1897 and 1899 respectively) and he won the third medal at the 1901 Exhibition.

D.S., Mickl, in light green indelible pencil, one page, 8vo, n.p., 15th October 1944, in German. The partially printed document, completed in typescript, relates to the award of the Bronze medal for Bravery to Corporal Karl Benischek who surmounted 'a strip of terrain under heavy machine gun fire and instructed the platoon commander', the narrative adding that the action took place on 18th July 1944 and that Benischek 'was particularly distinguished by the fact that he was the messenger of a terrain patrol under heavy machine-gun fire, instructed the platoon commander and was the first to attack the enemy…..and destroyed several bandits'. With several official ink stamps. VG

ALFONSO XIII: (1886-1941) King of Spain 1886-1931. Signed and inscribed 7.5 x 10.5 photograph `Alfonso RH´, showing the young King standing in a formal full length pose wearing military uniform. Photograph by Art-Fot studio of Madrid. Signed by the King in bold black fountain pen ink to a clear area at the head of the image and dated 1909 in his hand. Heavy creases, not affecting the signature. F The signed photograph is inscribed to “Mr. Mariani”. Mariani (1838-1914) was a French chemist from the island of Corsica. Between 1863 and 1868 Mariani started marketing a coca wine called Vin Tonique Mariani (with Peruvian coca) which was made from Bordeaux wine and coca leaves. Advertisements for Vin Mariani claimed that it would restore health, strength, energy and vitality. Popes Leo XIII and Pius X were both Vin Mariani drinkers, the first appearing on a poster endorsing the wine and awarding a Vatican gold medal to Mariani for creating it. Edison claimed it helped him stay awake longer. Ulysses S. Grant drank Vin Mariani while writing his memoirs, and other notables who endorsed Vin Mariani include Emile Zola, Charles Gounod, Sarah Bernhardt, etc..

MUSSOLINI BENITO: (1883-1945) Italian Fascist Dictator of World War II. Executed. An excellent and rare Autograph Manuscript by Mussolini,one page, 4to, n.p. [Rome], 23rd January 1931, in Italian. Mussolini´s bold black ink manuscript is written to the verso of a printed proof page from his Dottrina del Fascismo ("Doctrine of Fascism") which would be published a year later, and refers to Balbo´s transatlantic flight, recommending the grant of the gold medal for his aeronautical merits, stating in part `..ad Orbetello per oltre un anno, e in silenzio, uomini e machine, per la crociera transatlantica. A preparazione materiale e morale ultimate, assumeva il Comando della Squadra e attraverso poche tappe difficili e fortunose effetuava con undici apparecchi.. il grande volo oceanico, mai prima tentato in formazione.. esempio altissimo di perizia e di ardimento..´ ("..at Orbetello, for over a year, and in silence, men and machines, worked on the transatlantic cruise. With the material and moral preparation completed, he [Balbo] assumed command of the squad and through a few difficult and fortunate stages he carried out with eleven aircrafts… the great ocean flight, never before attempted in formation .. a very high example of expertise and courage.."), further and demonstrating that the new regime leaders are the first to prove `..nell´adempimento del dovere e nello sprezzo del pericolo´ (".. in the fulfilment of duty and in contempt of danger") Two years later Mussolini, concerned because of the increase of popularity of Balbo, appointed the Marshal of the Italian Air Force Governor-general of the Italian colony of Lybia. Upper corners clipped and pinhole to corners, otherwise G Italo Balbo (1896-1940) Italian Marshal of the Air Force and heir apparent to Benito Mussolini.Balbo led several transatlantic flights. The first, and the one referred to by Mussolini in the present manuscript, consisted of twelve flying boats (initially fourteen), Savoia-Marchetti S-55, departing from Orbetello on 17th December 1930, reaching Rio de Janeiro in Brazil and returning to Italy on 15th January 1931.

Bocklin states that he only received his correspondent's letter upon his return from Italy and continues to inform his correspondent 'If an where the Keller medal is reproduced I don't know. If the Illustrierte Zeitung or another newspaper published such a reproduction it happened without my knowledge, and therefore its design by any newspaper is not dependent by a reproduction in the Schweizer Rundschau. From my side I give my permission with pleasure'. With blank integral leaf (slight traces of former mounting to the verso). VG

A good set of manuscript notes, scientific calculations and diagrams prepared by Becquerel, unsigned, two pages, oblong 4to, n.p., n.d., in French. The notes, presumably prepared by the physicist for a lecture, are headed Radioactivity, and form an extensive list of prompts, in part, 'Historical. 1st Observation 1896. 1st proof. Medal. Discharge of electrified bodies. Experiment on phosphorescent sulphides. General for uranium salts. Atomic property. Role of the air. Laws of loss. Exp. by Kelvin, Beattie and de Smolan, 1897. Rutherford 1899. Ionization. Saturation current, 1898. Thorium. M. Schmidt and M. Curie. Work of M. and Mme. Curie. Polonium. Radium. Debierne. Actinium. Radium spectrum. Magnetic deviation experiences. Giesel, Meyer and Schveider. H. B. Cliches. Concentration. Deviable and non-deviable rays'. To the foot of the first page appear various scientific calculations and in the left column of each page Becquerel has added eleven small pen sketches illustrating the deviations of Polonium. An interesting and rare scientific manuscript on the subject for which Becquerel is most famous, and in which he acknowledges the contributions made by his colleagues including Pierre and Marie Curie, Ernest Rutherford etc. VG

RICHTHOFEN MANFRED VON: (1892-1918) German Fighter Pilot, the most successful flying ace of World War I. An extremely rare vintage signed sepia postcard photograph of the Red Baron in a head and shoulders pose wearing a cap and overcoat and with his Pour le Merite medal ('Blue Max') proudly displayed around his neck. Number 503 from the series of World War I aviator postcards published by Willi Sanke. Signed ('Fr. v Richthofen') in fountain pen ink by Richthofen with his name alone at the base of the image, partially across a slightly darker area although perfectly legible. Authentic signed portraits of Richthofen are extremely rare as a result of the ace-of-aces death at the young age of 25. Some slight traces of former mounting to the verso, otherwise VG

Collection of WW1 officer portrait photographs includes KIA Lieutenant Michael George Stocks 2nd battalion Grenadier Guards shown in uniform. Killed in action 10 November 1914 aged 21 years. War diaries for that day show that the unit had been in the trenches at Klein Zillerbeck and had for days been under heavy fire. On the 10th November high explosive shelling had blown in many trenches. 21 were killed incl 3 officers, one of which was Michael Stocks mentioned in the diaries that day. Eric is shown on his medal car as service with Coldstream Guards during WW1 - further research necessary. Also included copy of war diaries from 1st - 11th November 1914, copy of medal index card, CWGC in memory of and print out of headstone. (The Stocks family resided at the Woodhall estate, Hilgay, Norfolk and Upper Shibden Hall, Halifax).
