As a result of the adventure , he is now in Hospital at the front and the story comes from a New Zealand Baptist Minister The Rev T A Williams, who says that Lieut Lambourne has a fracture of the elbow and the left humerus and a flesh wound in his left hip. He is doing well and is not in danger. Mr Williams says that he was flying-over somewhere or other-doing observation work, when three Hun machines made for him. While he was fighting these, three other Hun machines appeared above him. In the fight his controlling gear was shot away, and only two of his connecting rods were left.. His Observer was shot through the face and had his jaw fractured, and his left eye destroyed. Lambourne was shot in the arm and the hip. Still they fought until the Observer collapsed. Lieut Lambourne piloted his aircraft homeward and remembering at a certain aerodrome there was a doctor, and made for that and landed in a state of collapse. It will be some months before he is himself again, and will probably be sent to England. Lieut Lambourne is the son of Mr W T Lambourne of 32 Mansfield Road , Croydon. A SUBMARINERS DSM TO PO A I REDWOOD HMS TRASHER. A George V1 Distinguished Service Medal awarded to J.114743 A.I. Redwood PO. HMS Trasher a T Class Submarine which was serving in the Middle East when PO Redwood was awarded his decoration on the 30/6/1942. For Gallant and Distinguished Service in successful patrols, while serving in HM Submarine Trasher. Petty officer D/J.114743 Archibald Ian Redwood, was among the crew who received the DSM at that time (6). Also with the medal is a Long Service Good Conduct Medal named to J.114743 A I Redwood PO. HMS Dolphin. Issued as being awarded on the 23rd November 1943. A clasp (not present) is also listed as issued 4/12/1958, List 465. This would need to be confirmed. It was while he was serving on Trasher that it was found that two unexploded bombs were lodged in the forward gun casing. Lt P S W Roberts and Po Thos Wm Gould crawled out and released the second bomb by struggling for 50 minutes with Roberts pulling Gould along, by the feet. This while the Submarine was rolling heavily, due to the bombs. LG The King has been graciously pleased to approve the grant of the Victoria Cross for great valour, while serving in HM Submarine Trasher to Lt Peter Scawen Watkinson Roberts RN and Petty Officer Thomas William Gould The Citation reads, ""On February 16th in daylight HM Submarine Trasher attacked and sank a heavily escorted supply ship. She was at once attacked by depth-charges and was bombed by aircraft. The presence of two unexploded bombs in the gun-casing was discovered when after dark the submarine surfaced and began to roll. Lt Roberts and Petty Officer Gould volunteered to remove the bombs, which were of a type unknown to them. The danger in dealing with the second bomb was very great. To reach it they ahd to go through the casing, which was so low they had to lie at full length to move it. Through this narrow space, in complete darkness, they pushed and dragged the bomb for a distance of some 20 feet until it could be lowered over the side. Every time the bomb was moved there was a loud twanging noise as of a broken spring which added nothing to their peace of mind. The deed was more gallant as H M Trashers presence was known to the enemy; she was close to the enemy coast and in waters where his patrols were known to be active day and night. There was a very great chance, and they knew it, that the submarine might have to crash dive while they were under the casing. Had this happened they must have drowned. HM Submarine Thrasher sank many ships in the Mediterranean and later in the Far East. See Illustration
