CASED MASONIC MEDALS-RING etc A 9CT Gold Masonic Signet Ring, enamel decoration and device inset, with reverse initials A W B. A serving Brother medal in silver, also a scm Royal Masonic Hospital modernisation medal, also a gilt Masonic tie clasp, etc. A Masonic apron with Oxfordshire centre, sash and gloves with rosettes etc. All in a brown leather case with no initials present, though all was the property of No 3619 Bro A W Bailey.

A GENERAL OFFICERS MAMELUKE. A General Officers Mameluke 1831 pattern sword by Wilkinsons, number 26624. Four rosettes on the grips and crossed Baton & Sword on the crossguard. Complete with a brass scabbard and clean 31.1/4" blade. Etched with crisp designs of both General Officers Insignia and Crown above VR. With the initials E F C on the blade, the property of Sir Edward Chapman. KCB FRGS. General Sir Edward Francis Chapman was born on the 14th November 1840 and died in May 1926. Commencing his service in the Bengal Artillery in June 1858. Major General in 1889, Director of Military Intelligence 1896-1901.1 Retiring as Master Gunner St James Park in 1916 He fought in the Abyssinia War (Despatches and Medal) in the actions at Agoree and the Capture of Magdala. Then onto China afterwards Afghanistan (Chief of Staff to Lord Roberts). He was Mentioned in Despatches twice, awarded the Medal and two bars, also a Khedives Bronze Star. Ghazni and North Afghanistan Field Force, loater in the Kabul/Khandahar Force March to October 1880. Actions of Ahmed Khel then the 1st September Battle, serving in the Relief Force. Again in Burma in 1885. In 1891 he became ADC to Queen Victoria and was a KCB in 1905. Head of the Army in Scotland and Ceremonial Head of the Royal Artillery. See Illustration

Historical Society AD 1770 with William V Burke inscribed. A Freedom of the City of London certificate named to Luke William Burke Teeling Citizen and Pavior of London, dated 27th April 1950. Letters to and concerning William Teeling MP, some signed by Clement Atlee or Sir Cecil Levita, etc. Mostly concerning Teelings questions on back dated awards of the MID Oakleaf, prior to WW1. Whos Who C1969 entry confirmation; Teeling Sir Luke William Burke Kt 1962 MA Author and Traveller. Born 5th Feb 1903, o/c of Luke Alexander Teeling and Margaret Mary, oldest daughter and heiress of William Burke of Ower Co Galway. He married in 1942 Mary Julia e/d of late Charles H O'Connor and sister of 25th O'Connor Don. Educated the Preparatory School, Edgsbaston. BA 1924. MA 1958. Exec Chairman Catholic Emigration Society of Gt Britain and Northern Ireland 1929-31. Represented the Overseas League as Mem of Council at Melbourne Centenary 1934. RAF 1940-45, elected to Parliament (U) Brighton 1944-50. Pavilion Div of Brighton 1950-69. Led Parliamentary Delegation to Finland 1947, Japan 1947 and Peru 1955, B Guiana 1965. South Korea 1964 also Malta Independence Celebrations 1964. Awarded Commander Order of Merit Peru 1957. Knight of Malta (Honour & Devotion). Order of the Brilliant Star of China. Coronation Medals 1937 & 1953. Gold Staff Officer in the former. Author of many books including Englands French Dominion ? 1933. Ameriocan Stew 1933. The Pope in Politics 1937. Crisis for Christianity 1939, also Gods of Tomorrow 1936 etc. An early supporter of a Channel Tunnel, travelled as a Tramp in the USA during the 1930's. Also researched Nazi Youth during the same decade. A Grand Uncle was hung for his part in the 1798 Rebellion. His father was Accountant General in the Irish Supreme Court. Resigned his seta due to Ill Health in 1969, died 26th October 1975. See Illustration.

A 4th ROYAL FUSILIERS 1914 STAR/BAR TRIO. A 1914 Star with bar also British War & VIctory Medals named to 11695 Pte A S Rowley 4/R.Fus on the first medal which has been gilded. 11695 A. Cpl. A S Rowley R.Fus. Alfred S Rowley served with the 4th London Regiment in France from 18th August 1914. He would have presumably taken part in the Battles of Mons, where the first two VC's of the war, were won by Lt Maurice Dease and Private Sidney Godley. The Regiment also took part in the Battles of Le Cateau, 1st Marne, The Aisne, La Bassee and 1st Ypres. Alfred Rowley also was attached to the R Sussex Regt as a A/Cpl under Number L/12917.

Serving in France from the 13th August 1914, he was treated for Dysentery in October 1914. He was awarded a Silver Wound Badge under List LC/4815 whilst serving with the Chinese Labour Corps.

A Delhi Durbar 1911 unofficially named to 89 Pte W Russell R Highrs. A Death Plaque named to William Russell. William Russell was the son of John Russell and husband of Catherine MacMillan Russell, both residing at 169 Baldridgeburn Road, Dunfermline, Scotland. He Died of Wounds received in France on the 15th October 1914, having served there since the the 13th August 1914. His Delhi Durbar Medal is confirmed on the Forces site details.

A ROYAL FUSILIERS DCM MONS STAR/BAR TRIO (MID) GROUP (4) A George V Distinguished Conduct Medal named to L-11154 Sjt P Garrod 1/R Fus. A 1914 Star with Bar named to L-11154 Pte P Garrod 1/R Fus. British War & Victory Medals, the latter with MID Oakleaf named to L-11154 Sjt P Garrod R Fus. Percy Garrod served in France from the 8th November 1914 and would have appeared to be in almost immediate action. His MIC details confirm his entitlement to both Star and Bar plus Roses. His Mention in Despatches was in the London Gazette of the 22nd May 1917 Volume 30086 and page 5026. His Distinguished Conduct Medal was in the London Gazette on the 1st January 1918. His Home Town is shown as Stevenage. His Citation reads; For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When his platoon officer became a casualty during an attack he took command of the platoon, and led it with great ability under heavy fire. He has rendered valuable service during a very long period, and has always set a magnificent example of courage and devotion to duty to his men (7th April 1918) See Illustration

LORD CHELMSFORD's SWORD. A Grenadier Guards sword by Henry Wilkinson of Pall Mall London, un-numbered with Lord Chelmsford's family crest on the blade. Gothic hilt with extremely clean and crisp 32" slightly curved blade, contained in a black leather scabbard with brass mounts. the 1822 pattern sword has VR and Grenadier Guards Flaming Grenade device, which is also inset in the gilt hilt guard. Provenance. Purchased as Lot 38 of the DNW Sale of the 14th December 2006. Frederic Thesiger was first the Lord then 2nd Baron Thesiger. Born 31/05/1827 he died of a seizure whilst playing snooker at the United Services Club on the 9th April 1905. Educated at Eton his Military Service was to begin, with a failure in 1844 to purchase a Commission in the Grenadier Guards. He was successful in joining the Rifle Brigade later that year. Then in 1845 he purchased a position, in the "Grenadier Guards. He served in the Crimea receiving the Crimea Medal, Turkish and Sardinian Medals also the Order of Medjidie 5th Class (MID). Then in the Indian Mutiny as a Lt Col 95th (Derbyshire) Regt (MID) later as an ADC or DAAG. Again in the Abbassynian War he was at Magdala and awarded a CB also made ADC to the Queen.. He met and befriended Sir Henry Bartle Frere, during his service. In South Africa with the local rank of Lt General in 1878. He successfully completed the 9th Cape War in 1878. The Disasters and final then Victory at the burning of Ulundi, are all well known. It was this last gasp victory before Garnet Wolseley took command, that partially rescued his reputation. ( 1879 he was awarded the GCB) His part in Zulu Dawn was played by Peter O'toole . He is buried in Brompton Cemetery London. See Illustration

AN RFC GT WAR MEDAL & 25th LONDON CYCLISTS TD etc. A British War medal named to Capt T H Vitty RFC. Thomas Henry Vitty resided at Northlake House, Kew Gardens, Surrey. He served as a Territorial Officer in the 4th Company London Electrical Engineers. Promoted Lieutenant in 1910, he was transferred during the Great War in an MIEE Flying Commission to the Royal Flying Corps Technical Branch. Later Temp Major RAF. A Victory Medal named to Major M H Easton. A Territorial Officers Decoration with hallmarks for London 1921, also an unnamed Defence Medal. The four mounted for wear, possibly related by marriage and mixed up some time ago. Both officers were from London and in the Territorial Force at the same time. Malcolm Henry Easton was serving in the 25th Battalion London Cyclists Regiment, spending 2 years and five months in India in the Gt War. At one time an officer in the London CC. A matching miniature group of four, mounted for wear. An Edward V11 Royal Engineers Officers Cap Badge in white metal, also a 'turning wheel' officers bronze RA cap badge, etc.

Squadron Serjeant Major Fred Wallis served with his Regiment the 7th Dragoon Guards in France from 13th October 1914. (Entitled Star & Clasp). He also served in the Corps of Dragoons and in the 7th Dragoons under number D/20464. He later served with his Regiment in Iraq, he was awarded the General Service Medal with clasp Iraq 4th April 1924. His addresses were given as c/o Mrs Steane, 19 Melling Road, Bootle Liverpool and later 7 Goodwin Road, Aintree, Liverpool. Albert E Stanford served in the 7th Dragoon Guards under number D/15155.

A 19th HUSSARS OFFICERS EGYPT & QSA DEFENCE OF LADYSMITH PAIR. A two bar Egypt 1884 Medal with bars El-Teb-Tamaai and The Nile 1884-85, named to Lieut H G Marsh 19/Hussars. A Queens South Africa with ghost dated reverse and bar Defence of Ladysmith, named to Major H G Marsh 19/Hrs. Harry Graham Marsh was born on the 5th April 1861. 2/Lt on the 9th July 1882. Major 7th February 1897. Retired 5th June 1901. War Services show he served in the Egyptian Expedition 1884. Soudan Battle of El Teb Tamaai. Soudan 1884-85 Nile Clasp and entitled to a Khedives Star. South African War including actions at Reitfontein and Lombards Kop. Queens South Africa Medal with clasp Defence of Ladysmith. During the Gt War he was 2nd I/C 14th Reserve Cavalry Regt. (Act Lt/Col) Educated at Lancing College. Both medals court mounted for wear, presumably the Khedives 1884 Star (issued unnamed) was mounted separately to these two medals. Harry Marsh's only son was Killed in the Great War, Philip Everard Graham Marsh MC,was Killed on the 20th December 1918. He was awarded the Military Cross in the Kings Birthday Honours Gazette 2/6/1916. Gazette Issue 29608. Also educated at Lancing College. A superb photograph of P E G Marsh appears in the Lancing Roll. It states Killed whilst Flying in England, 7th Reserve Training Squadron. His plaque is in St Mary Magdelene Church in Wethersfield Essex. Inloving memory of Philip Everard Graham Marsh, only son of Major H G Marsh of this parish. Husband of Eileen Ruth daughter of George Campbell Macochy. Killed in a collision whilst flying on duty at Feltwell Norfolk aged 24 years. From Sandhurst to the ASC, where he served for 3 1/2 years in France. (Flying Instructor).

Marcell Gutteridge also awarded a Long Service R N R medal in 1926, as J33822. A British War Medal named to 548 J Boon 7th-London R. Pte John Boon the son of Arthur Thomas and Clara Boon of 40 Gt Sutton Street, Clerkenwell, London, was KIA in France on the 16th May 1915. He had landed on the 18th March 1915, buried in Post Office Rifles Cemetery, Festubert. Grave Ref 1.C.1. (Entitled to a 1914/15 Star & Victory Medal) A Miniature medal group of five medals, mounted for wear. 1939/45, Atlantic Star with France & Germany bar, Africa Star with N Africa 1942-42 bar, Defence & War medals. Believed to be the son of M Gutteridge, he also served in the Navy. A Great War pair named to 107706 Spr E B Whitton. RE. Also two original postcard photographs of the recipient in France.

GT WAR MEDALS TO THE SAY BROTHERS A I F INCLUDING AN MM. A Military Medal named to 506 Sjt L Say 1/Coy Aust M G C. A 1914/15 Star named to 506 Pte L Say 3/BN.A.I.F. A British War Medal named to 506 Sgt L Say 3-Bn A.I.F. A Victory Medal named to 506 Sjt L Say MM. 1-M G C A.I.F. A 1914/15 Star named to 394 Pte D Saye 12/BN A.I.F. British War & Victory Medals named to 394 Pte D Saye 12-BN. A.I.F. The Say brothers left Somerset to seek their future in Australia prior to the Great War. Leonard Say was a School Teacher at Corryong School, Victoria. He enlisted in the 3rd Battalion A.I.F and sailed for the front on the 20th October 1914 in HMAT Euripides. Promoted to Sergeant he was serving in the 1st Company 1st Australian Machine Gun Corps, when he was awarded the Military Medal in the London Gazette Number 30431 14th December 1917. This was an immediate award for his 'Leadership and Courage during the action on the 4th October 1917' A copy of the original letter dated 28th May 1918 from The Commonwealth of Australia. Department of Defence. Base Records Office A.I.F. Melbourne, reads thus. Dear Sir, I have much pleasure in forwarding herewith Copy of extract from Third Supplement No 30431 to the London Gazette dated 14th Dec 1917 relating to the Conspicuous Services rendered by your son the late No 506 Sergeant L Say 1st Machine Gun Company. Awarded the Military Medal. 'His Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to approve the award of the Military Medal for bravery in the field to the undermentioned non-commissioned officer No 506 Sergeant L Say. The above has been promulgated in Commonwealth of Australia Gazette No 66 dated 2nd May 1918. (Also Douglas Stanley Say 1st Australian Infantry fell at Gallipolli May 24th 1915. This is the only record I have of him & no official number) Yours Faithfully W Mackintosh Capt. For Officer I/C Base Records. Leonard Say was Killed in Action at Passchendale aged 26 years on the 17th November 1917. He is commemorated on Panel 31 of the Menin Gate Memorial. A superb photograph of Sgt Say is on the Australian Memorial Site. Douglas Stanley Say (Saye) enlisted at Hobart Tasmania, whilst employed as 1st assistant at Messrs Hawkins & Co of Hobart. He sailed on the 24th October 1914 in HMAT Geelong, in the 12th Battalion A.I.F. Severley wounded at Gallipoli he was taken by Hospital Ship to the Bombay Presidency Egypt where he Died of his Wounds on the 24th May 1915. Both were the sons of George and Elizabeth Say of The Manse, Middle Lambrook, South Petherton , Somerset. aged 26. Three small original photographs of the Say brothers, are with the Medals. Their Father was alive when the news of their deaths arrived, their mother had been dead for some time. See Illustration

Together with an original letter addressed to G H Derrington, Guarlford Court, situated near to Malvern. From Hanley Castle, referring to Coronation Day 1937. Shown in 1942 Lists as serving on M M S 65 S/L In 1944 shown as O/C M M S 65. Shown in 11/4/1945 as serving In Command of M M S 272. Retired List 1946. Mention in Despatches London Gazette 14/6/1945 Page 2975. Issue 37119. Captain of HMS Motorised Minesweeper 65 Pennant J565, launched July 1942. CO from September 1944 until January 1945, sold to Turkey in 1946. MMS 65 Launched in 1943, CO from the 11th April 1945 until 20th February 1946. Pennant number J 772. Both vessels were Class 1 Minesweepers.

THE MEDALS OF S-MAJOR STROUD. ROYAL ULSTER RIFLES. 1939/45 Star, France & Germany Star, War Medal, General Service Medal bar Palestine 1945-48 named to 14426791 Pte G C Stroud R.U.R. Territorial Efficiency Medal bar T & A V R (QE11 issue) named to S Sgt G C Stroud RE. Boxed Normandy Medal with miniature numbered 17101. Boxed Voluntary Service Medal named to Pte G C Stroud Wilts Regt Staff Sergeant Stroud volunteered for service in the Wiltshire Regiment, taking part in the D Day Landings. In the campaign to liberate Europe he was wounded by a gunshot to the hip. Sent home he upon recovery transferred to the Royal Ulster Rifles, serving in the Palestine Campaign. Serving in the Territorial Army after the war in the Royal Engineers, awarded his TEM with post 1969 ribbon. The first five medals are mounted for wear.

A NAVAL BRIGADE 1914 STAR & ROYAL FLEET RESERVE LSGC GROUP. A 1914 Star with Rosette on the ribbon, named to R.M.A 13976 Pte S E Carew R M Brigade. British War & Victory Medals named to R.M.A. 13976 Gnr S E Carew. A George V Royal Fleet Reserve Long Service Good Conduct Medal, named to R.M.A 13976 (Ply B 1911) S E Carew Marine R.F.R. Stanley Eli Carew enlisted in Bristol aged 17 years in 1914. He served on among others HMS Royal Sovereign which was commissioned to late to take part in the Battle of Jutland. Admiral John Jellicoe ordered her to remain at anchor, her crew not considered up to scratch, due to limited training time only. She served with the Fleet for the rest of the War, seeing service also between the wars. In WW11 she was loaned to the Soviets and returned almost as only fit for scrap. He served until 1936 and his documents of service and ships postcards, are included in the lot. Including the loss of the ships cat 'Ginger' Drowned at Sea 20th July 1917. 'A late Shipmate' who was loved by all. Crew of the ship and Ships Entertainment etc.

AN OBE GROUP OF SEVEN MEDALS TO MJR H M HEPPELL ESSEX Regt. An OBE awarded to Mjr Hugh Middleton Heppell Essex Regt and WO, 1/1/1919. A 1914/15 Star named to Capt H M Heppell Essex R. British War & Victory Medals named to Capt H M Heppell. A 1911 Coronation Medal privately named to Sgt Heppell Blundells OTC. A 1939/45 Star & War Medal in addressed box of issue, to Mjr H M Heppell OBE (Army Medal Office-War Office). Born on the 5th April 1893 in Somerset, the son of E M Heppell he was educated at Blundells School. He was Commissioned 2/Lt in the 11th Battalion of the Essex Regiment 22nd January 1913. He was Adjudant of the Battalion 14th September 1914. Served in France & Flanders from 31st July 1915, until the 26th September 1915. Placed on the Staff in the War Office 16th December 1915, he was again in France & Flanders from the 9th February 1918 until after the Armistice. Wounded and Mentioned in Despatches London Gazette 20/12/1918. His address for his Great War medals in November 1921 was The School of Physical Training, Hdqtrs Gymnasium, Queens Avenue, Aldershot. He was Adjudant of the 5th Territorial Battalion the Essex Regiment in the 1931 Army List. Retiring in 1932 he volunteered for service in 1939. A H Heppell played Rugby for Clifton RFC in 1912-13, further research to confirm it was him is required. His Post War address for his medals was Lyndhurst in Hants.
