A rare Crimean War related teapot and cover by G. F Bowers, Brownhill circa 1856-67, inscribed 'D & A Hall, Macclesfield' and transfer-printed in black with the 'Light Cavalry Charge at Balaclava' and 'Sebastopol Attack and Capture of the Malakhoff by the French', printed factory mark, 18.5cm high (finial to cover broken, spout chipped) It is not known exactly when George Frederick Bowers became a manufacturer. From the documentary evidence is unclear whether he was in business as early as 1841 or 1842, however on 14 December 1843 a teapot shape, design number 12331, was registered in the name of George Frederick Bowers and Company, Brownhills China Works, Tunstall, Staffordshire. By 1850 the firm was making both earthenware and porcelain and their products won a gold medal at the 1851 Exhibition. George Frederick Bowers died on 1 January 1867.
