M.C. London Gazette entry 22 Sept. 1916 (9276) 'For conspicuous gallantry. He went over the parapet twice in broad daylight and brought back wounded men from No Man's Land' Lt. Johnston was one of four officers competing to retrieve wounded during the night of 24 July 1916 under heavy fire, by daylight snipers joined the fire with Lt. Johnston receiving a fatal wound
