A GREAT WAR CASUALTY PAIR OF MEDALS TO PRIVATE B.J. ROWE, 15TH BN CANADIAN INFANTRY comprising the British War Medal 1914-20 and Victory Medal (both 192866 Pte. B.J. Rowe. 15-Can. Inf.), officially impressed, unmounted; together with a trench art paper-knife, the blade engraved 'Battle of Somme July 1916'; a quantity of photographic and other postcards, some of Wellington O.T.C. interest; and two Red Cross letters relating to his death. Note (1): 192866 Private Bernard John Rowe, 15th Battalion, Canadian Infantry, died on 26th September 1916. He is remembered with honour on the Vimy Memorial. Note (2): A contemporary newspaper cutting, which accompanies the lot, adds that Bernard Rowe was the son of Mrs Row of Clifford Terrace, Wellington (Somerset), and the late Mr James Rowe, for many years headmaster of the Courtland Road Boys' School. Upon leaving school Bernard was apprenticed to a jeweller in Fore Street, before emigrating to Canada at the age of twenty. In 1915 he joined the 92nd Highlanders but was then transferred to another battalion. He completed his training in England and is known to have visited Wellington during his leave, prior to departing for the Front. He was twenty-six years of age when he was killed.

Dryden, 7th Bn, South Staffordshire Regiment was mentioned in a despatch from Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig, 9th April 1917; various brass buttons and badges; and a commemorative Edward VIII Coronation medal.

FULHAM DIVISON 2 MEDAL 1949 Division 2 Championship medal awarded to John (Jack) McDonald , 1948-49 John McDonald was signed by Fulham from Bournemouth and between 1948 and 52, McDonald made 75 appearances for Fulham scoring 19 goals. McDonald played in 41 of the 42 games scoring 9 goals as Fulham were winners of Division 2 and promoted to the first Division. The hall-marked gold medal has Football League Champions Division 2 and on the reverse is inscribed J.McDonald Fulham FC , Season 1948-49." Comes with Football League box which has gilt inscription and box shows signs of wear and ageing around edges. Good
SOUTHAMPTON MEDAL 1953 Medal awarded to Jack McDonald of Southampton , Football Combination Cup Competition, Runners up 1952-53. Southampton purchased Jack McDonald from Fulham in 1952 and initially he was successful in their first team, but he lost form and played most of the season in the reserves winning this medal in the process. During his time at Southampton, Jack made 16 first team appearances scoring four goals. The medal, with case, has The Football Combination Cup Competition on the front and on the reverse has a hall-mark and is inscribed Runners-Up 1952-53. Arsenal won the trophy. Good
QPR MEDAL Gold hall-marked winners medal, London FA Professional Charity Fund 1930, reverse inscribed J.H.Armstrong Winners QPR. Armstrong played for QPR between 1928 and 1933. QPR defeated Chelsea and the gold medal comes complete with original case and gilt inscription on top of case (London Football Association). Good
CHELSEA - WAR CUP MEDAL 1945 Winners medal for the Football League South War Cup Final in which Chelsea defeated Millwall 2-0. This was the first major trophy won by Chelsea, the Final being played at Wembley. The medal was awarded to John (Jack) McDonald who was a right winger and who scored one of the two Chelsea goals in the Final. John was a loan player for Chelsea having been loaned by Bournemouth to the London Club who played eight guest players in the Final including Black, Hardwick and Goulden and Captain Harris. The medal is gold coloured and made by Vaughtons and comes with a cardboard box as it was wartime and many items were in short supply. There is no hallmark on the medal but it is metal and gold coloured, The front of the medal reads London Football Association and there is a Cup inscribed above the London FA Coat of Arms as the London FA organised football for the senior Southern based clubs during the War. The medal has been entered by the McDonald family. Jack McDonald made 7 Cup appearances for Chelsea scoring four goals and also made 3 League appearances scoring one goal. Medal is in good condition, case has a little damage to the lid
Charles Goldsborough Anderson (1865-1936) - Oil on canvas - Half length portrait of the pioneering British alpine skier Doreen Elliott, signed and dated 1916, 58cm x 48cm Doreen Elliott was a founder member and former president of the Ladies Skiing Club. She was an Olympian and in 1928 raced in the inaugural Murren Inferno, the worlds longest downhill ski race. In the World Alpine Ski Championships of 1932 she won a bronze medal in the slalom and achieved 5th place in the combined event. Condition: **General condition consistent with age
