A fine Victorian mahogany and cube parquetry jewel box by J B Heslop of Nottingham, c1900, the lid with ribbon border, fitted with a drawer to one end, 18cm h; 18 x 28cm Provenance: By descent in the Heslop family to J B Heslop's granddaughter, by whom sold in these 'rooms 26 March 2010, lot 964, to the late vendor The Nottingham cabinetmaker John Burn Heslop (1852-1935) was born at Berwick-on-Tweed and apprentice to the Tweedmouth joiner and cabinet maker John Burn. He moved to the East Midlands in about 1870 and was engaged by, it is believed, the highly regarded Nottingham firm of decorators and furnishers, Foster & Cooper where he was to remain until he retired. The firm's woodwork and furnishings was supplied to many country houses and churches in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. One of its most notable schemes, 'in the most finished style', were the series of grand rooms in Smedley's Hydropathic Establishment in the fashionable spa town of Matlock Bath.
