"A William and Mary Marquetry Cabinet on Stand in the manner of Gerrit Jensen, c1690, the cornice with leaf tip marquetry above a cushion drawer with overall seaweed and strapwork marquetry decoration surrounding putto and exotic birds. The pair of doors with similar decoration of putti, exotic birds and leaf enclosing eleven decorated drawers each centred with leafy grotesque masks and surrounding a central cupboard depicting dancing figures and a musician, opening to reveal eight small drawers behind which are a further set of concealed drawers. The stand fitted one long decorated drawer on six tapering pedestal legs with shaped stretcher all with similar decoration on bun terminals.3ft 11in x 5ft 7inProvenance: Acquired 1967 from Edward Nowell of WellsFootnote:Lavishly decorated cabinets on stand of this type were intended for show. among the more prominent makers was Gerrit Jensen, a Dutchman working in London in the late 17th Century who was Cabinet maker in Ordinary to the Crown and documentary evidence survives for several of his pieces in Royal and aristocratic collections. Complex seaweed marquetry, arabesque scrolls and foliate ornamentation with small figures are typical of his work. Without contemporary evidence it is now impossible to say whether all the pieces attributed to him are actually his work or that of his workshop. The design of this piece, the layout of the drawers and the identical measurements of this Cabinet on Stand strongly suggest that it is from the same source as that from Gosterwood attributed to Jensen and recently on the market"

The most notable panels showing loss of inlay are the bird cabinet panel on the left hand side, to the upper branch area there is a large loss, approx 3cm x 2cm in size, the lower left hand side drawer, has a section missing to the upper member, panel with seated ladies, figure on right has loss to her kimono, the further panels remain in good order, however many have minor damage, (presently we have several small pieces of ivory and mother of pearl that need re-adhering to the cabinet. Small areas where panel work have been re-glued. Cabinet in good antique condition with only damage and losses comparable with the age. Due to the size and fragility of the cabinet, Wright Marshall would highly recommend that the cabinet is viewed in person as a condition report of this nature can not wholly be relied upon.
