A Very Fine Collection of 18th & 19th Century Microscope Spares, housed in an attractive French polished mahogany table collector's cabinet, drawer 1 contains mainly 18th century microscope parts including a large Bonnani stage, top eyepiece for a Martin drum microscope with an ebony lens holder, Jones most improved second stages, large frog plate and other items. Drawer 2 contains mainly objective lenses including 18th century leiberkuhn lenses simple button lenses, a complete set of lenses from a Carpenter type microscope, early Pritchard type achromatic objectives and other items. A 19th Century mahogany bookcase cabinet, the astragal glazed upper section with adjustable shelving over two cupboard doors enclosing two linen drawers CONDITION REPORTS 215cm h x 110cm w x 51.5cm d. Overall condition generally good though with signs of wear and tear conducive to age and use. Base section has only two press drawers ie. top and bottom drawers missing. Cornice medallions appear to have signs of wear/rubbing suggesting there may have been something else there at one time, now polished off. Door has some signs of damage to the beading. See images for further detail. Base had slight scratching to the left hand door.
ALMA-TADEMA LAWRENCE: (1836-1912) Dutch-born English Painter. Vintage signed and inscribed sepia cabinet photograph of the artist in a head and shoulders pose. Photograph by John Collier of New Street, Birmingham and bearing his imprint to the lower mount (his name crossed through in ink) and verso. Signed ('L Alma Tadema') in ink to a light area at the base of the image. The inscription, to a Dr. Williamson, is a little light although reasonably legible. Together with an A.L.S., L Alma Tadema, one page, 8vo, Grove End Road, St. John's Wood, 11th November 1891, to Dr. Williamson. The artist states that he has returned home and feels much better as a result of his correspondent's care and the rest he enjoyed at Ventnor, further adding 'I wish not to be quite forgotten in the Isle of Wight & send you therefore my portrait which please keep as a memento of one who is happy to have made the acquaintance of you & yours…..' With blank integral leaf. Some light foxing and age wear to the photograph, otherwise VG, 2
CHAMBERLAIN NEVILLE: (1869-1940) British Prime Minister 1937-40. A scarce war date A.L.S., with his initials NC, two pages, 8vo, 11 Downing Street, Whitehall, 5th August 1940, to John [Anderson] ('My dear John'). Chamberlain writes in pencil and states that he was touched by his correspondent's note, adding that 'your sympathetic and affectionate words pleased me particularly because you are one of those whose good opinion I value' and further remarking 'I was afraid when I came in that I was faced with serious trouble which might have incapacitated me for a long time. However it seems that I have been spared that and I hope in about a fortnight to sit with my colleagues again & without loss of grip'. A letter of good association. A couple of light smudges to the upper left corner of the first page, only very slightly affecting the salutation, otherwise VG John Anderson (1882-1958) 1st Viscount Waverley. British Civil Servant & Politician who served in various posts in the War Cabinet during World War II. At the time of the present letter Chamberlain was suffering from terminal bowel cancer, although his surgeons withheld this information from him. He resumed work in mid-August, although only for a short period of time before passing away on 9th November 1940.
KITCHENER HERBERT: (1850-1916) 1st Earl Kitchener. British Field Marshal associated with the Boer War. Kitchener also played a central role in the early part of World War I. Early ink signature ('H H Kitchener, Major') on a slightly irregularly clipped oblong 12mo piece, evidently removed from the conclusion of a letter and with a few additional words of holograph text to the verso. Together with a vintage unsigned cabinet photograph by Messrs. Bassano of Old Bond Street, London, the image depicting Kitchener in a close-up head and shoulders pose wearing his uniform and medals. Photographer's imprint to the lower mount. Some very light, minor age wear, about VG, 2 Kitchener was promoted to the rank of Major on 20th July 1889 although had previously been given the Turkish rank bimbashi (major) in 1883 when he was dispatched to Egypt and took part in the reconstruction of the Egyptian Army.
