BRITISH ROYALTY: A fine, rare vintage signed Imperial Cabinet photograph by Queen Victoria (1819-1901) Queen of the United Kingdom Great Britain & Ireland 1837-1901, her son King Edward VII (1841-1910) King of the United Kingdom 1901-10, and her grandson King George V (1865-1936) King of the United Kingdom 1910-36 individually. The wonderful image, by W & D Downey of London, shows Queen Victoria seated in a full length pose holding her infant great grandson, the future King Edward VIII, in her lap. King Edward VII and King George V stand in full length poses either side of the Queen. Signed by Queen Victoria in black fountain pen ink to a light area at the base of the image, `Victoria R I & little Edward Albert`, also adding the date 16th July 1894 in her hand. Signed (`Albert Edward`) by King Edward VII and signed (`George`) by King George V, each in dark fountain pen ink with their names alone to clear areas of the image. Queen Victoria has experienced a little pen trouble, with a few letters a little light. Signed photographs depicting four generations of the British Royal family are rare and desirable. Some glue remnants to the borders of the photograph, evidently caused by previous framing. G. The photograph was captured at White Lodge, Richmond Park on the occasion of Prince Edward of York`s christening. In her journal for July 1894 Queen Victoria wrote `The dear fine baby wearing the Honiton lace robe…[made from her own wedding veil]…was brought in & handed to me-I then gave him to the Archbishop & recd. Him back….the child was v.good…..& afterwards we were photographed, I holding the baby in my lap, Bertie and Georgie standing behind me, thus making 4 generations.`

A good vintage signed 7 x 9.5 photograph by both Princess Louise and Princess Maud individually, the image showing the mother and daughter in a close head and shoulders pose together. Signed (`Louise`) by Princess Louise and signed (`Maudie`) by Princess Maud, each with their names alone in fountain pen ink to light areas at the base of the image. Together with a vintage signed sepia cabinet photograph by Princess Louise, the image depicting her standing in a three quarter length pose, quite possibly on the occasion of her wedding, with a young girl, most likely Princess Alice of Albany, at her side. ROYAL CHILDREN: A good vintage signed cabinet photograph by King Edward VIII (1894-1972) King of the United Kingdom January-December 1936. Later Duke of Windsor, King George VI (1895-1952) King of the United Kingdom 1936-52 and Mary, Princess Royal (1897-1965) Countess of Harewood individually. The image depicts the two young Princes standing in full length poses wearing naval uniforms alongside their sister who is seated in a full length pose. They are accompanied by their siblings, Prince Henry (1900-1974) Duke of Gloucester and Prince George (1902-1942) Duke of Kent. Photograph by W & D Downey of London. CHURCHILL WINSTON S.: (1874-1965) British Prime Minister 1940-45, 1951-55. Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1953. Fountain pen ink signature (`Winston S. Churchill`) on a slightly irregularly clipped piece removed from the conclusion of a letter signed. Three lines of text to the verso refer to a rifle and a court case involving Sir James Stevenson. Together with a selection of irregularly clipped signed pieces by various British Politicians, many of them Cabinet Ministers, all removed from letters or documents, including Herbert Morrison, Robert Cecil, Philip Sassoon, Clement Davies, R. Stafford Cripps, Lord Halifax, Max Aitken, Archibald Sinclair, Edward Carson, Leslie Hore-Belisha, Herbert Samuel, Christopher Addison, Kingsley Wood, J. R. Clynes, Austen Chamberlain, Philip Snowden, James Lowther, W. H. Beveridge etc. Generally G to VG, 34
CHURCHILL WINSTON S.: (1874-1965) British Prime Minister 1940-45, 1951-55. Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1953. T.L.S., Winston S. Churchill, with holograph salutation and subscription, one page, 4to, 10 Downing Street, Whitehall, to Sir Norman Brook, marked Personal and Confidential. Churchill writes, in full, `I am proposing to hold a Convocation for the conferring of Honorary Degrees at Bristol University, of which, as you know, I am Chancellor, in November of this year. It would give me great pleasure to submit your name to the University with a view to conferring a Degree upon you. Pray let me know if this would be agreeable to you.` Accompanied by the original envelope hand addressed by Churchill and signed by him with his initials (`WSC`) in the lower left corner. VG. . . . . . Lord Normanbrook (1902-1967) British Civil Servant. Cabinet Secretary 1947-62 as well as joint permanent secretary to HM Treasury and head of the Home Civil Service 1956-62. Normanbrook was one of the twelve pall bearers at Sir Winston Churchill`s funeral in 1965.
ATTLEE CLEMENT: (1883-1967) British Prime Minister 1945-51. A.L.S., Attlee, one page, oblong 8vo, Inner Temple, London, 15th June 1967, to Lady Normanbrook. Attlee offers his sympathy on the death of her husband, commenting `He was the most distinguished civil servant of his time and all of us who were in government owe him a deep debt of gratitude for his great services.` Together with Harold Macmillan (1894-1986) British Prime Minister 1957-1963. T.L.S., Harold Macmillan, with holograph salutation and subscription, one page, 8vo, Haywards Heath, Sussex, 23rd March 1976, to Lady Normanbrook. Macmillan states that it is too long since they last met and continues to invite her to Oxford for Encaenia, commenting `After the ceremony there is a luncheon in the library at All Souls. You might meet a few old friends. Pray think about it. I could probably arrange transport`. Both letters are laid down and with some very slight age wear, G to about VG, 2. . . . . HARALD OF DENMARK: (1876-1949) Prince of Denmark, brother of King Christian X. Large D.S., Harald, Prince of Denmark, one page, large folio, Copenhagen, 16th June 1921. The attractive, partially printed document, bears the heading of the Royal Chancellery for Noble Awards and Decorations, and confirms the appointment, by His Most Gracious Majesty, of Luigo Gabbrielle, an attaché at the Italian Foreign Minister`s Cabinet, to the rank of Commander Second Class of the Order of the Dannebrog. KEPPEL HENRY (1809-1904) British Admiral of the Fleet & STEPHENSON HENRY FREDERICK (1842-1919) British Admiral & Arctic Explorer, commanded HMS Discovery for the British Arctic Expedition of 1875-76. Both Admirals served in the Crimean War. A good signed imperial cabinet photograph (7 x 10) by both Keppel and Stephenson individually, the image depicting the two Admirals standing in three quarter length poses, each wearing their uniforms and medals.
