A Victorian flame mahogany and oak crossbanded rectangular sewing box, the hinged lid enclosing removable nine division tray above three further fitted base section, the small quantity of sewing sundries to include pin cushion etc, with letter which reads as follows: `This sewing box was made in 1865 in the spring of 1864 George Ward, the younger son of the Ward family who were hat manufacturers in Bredbury, Stockport, returned from two years in Italy where he had been gaining experience in the hatting industry, on his return he hopes to marry Ellen Axon the daughter of Phillip Axon and sister of George Axon, a long established and well respected Stockport family who lived in Bredbury. At this time the Hanover Chapel was being built in Tiviotdale, Stockport and the cabinet makers employed there were making items to raise building funds. George Ward had this workbox made as a present for Ellen Axon whom he married in 1866 at Hatherlow Chapel near Romiley, Stockport,` height 16.5cm, width 39.4cm, depth 38cm.
