A late Victorian mahogany pedestal desk made by Graham & Banks (makers name engraved in the frieze drawer), circa 1895, inverted front shape, leather inlay top, oversailing top above one long frieze drawer flanked by twin short, raised on twin tapering pedestals with three tapering drawers on swept feet. 76cm H x 106cm W x 61cm DNote:Graham and Banks Ltd445 Oxford Street with works at 50 Carnaby Street, London; cabinet makers (fl.1894-1908)The directors were Walter Banks, a former draper’s assistant (born c.1865), and James Graham (born 1861), a nephew of Peter Graham who once worked as an upholsterer’s salesman for Jackson & Graham [1881 Census].Graham & Banks produced a trade catalogue, c.1895, entitled The House Comfortable and The House Beautiful: its furniture and decoration portrayed in pen and camera (copy at the Caroline Simpson Library and Research Collection, Sydney Living Museums). In addition to the manufacture of furniture, according to the Academy Architecture and Architectural Review (1902) they also produced chimney pieces, panelling and fitments. Graham & Banks made a mahogany secretaire-bookcase which The Cabinet Maker (January, 1899) remarked had 'rich tones of the mahogany relieved by inlay of the broad decorative character that has been cultivated of late by one or two of our leading manufacturers’ (illus. An early to mid 20thC Continental mahogany side cabinet, the domed top with a red marble inset, above three shelves and two drawers, with rococo scroll gilt metal handles, the shaped base with a brass moulded edge, above a slide with brown tooled leather inset, and two drawers enclosing a single shelf, flanked by scrolling mounts, on shaped feet, 142cm high, 88cm wide, 40cm deep.
A Victorian burr wood and gilt side cabinet by Gillows, with triple section pink marble top, having three frieze drawers, the centre drawer stamped 'Gillows', with open centre section below flaked by two cupboards with glazed gilt 'tracery' doors bearing monograms WB, on low rounded feet with gilt scroll decoration, 93cm high, 164cm wide, 60cm deep.
Vintage / Retro: 'Model CB02 CEES BRAAKMAN Birch mid-century sideboard for Pastoe. A rare sideboard/cupboard cabinet with steam bench, birch ply feet in the same manner as Alvar Aalto. Interior complete with two pull our bent ply drawers and central shelf. Key present. H78.8cm x W88cm x D47.5cm Condition Report: It appears in fair condition for its age, some light surface marks to the top. The interior there are two 10cm parallel marks on the bottom shelf, towards thr front. The left hand runner for the left hand drawer is broken. There is a small dent to the right hand edge half way down. On the middle shelf at the front corner there is a small gouged hole along the side.
Red, white and brown coloration.In 1981 it was announced that a new jug in the Williamsburg series, the Cabinet Maker, would be produced. However, the series was cancelled in 1983, and the jug was not put into production at that time.
