In dem hier angebotenen Aquarell "Kleine Landschaft, hauptsächlich mit Farb=Quadraten" vermittelt nicht nur der Titel – jenseits einer linearen Leseweise – den Prozess des Abstrahierens, sondern er wird auch im kompositorischen Aufbau und der Farbfeldgestaltung sichtbar. Angeregt durch die Begegnung mit Wassily Kandinsky und Robert Delaunay, gelingt Paul Klee während der berühmten Tunisreise 1914 der Durchbruch zu abstrahierenden und farbig leuchtenden Kompositionen. Zusammen mit August Macke und Louis Moilliet unternimmt er eine dreiwöchige Studienreise nach Tunesien, in der sich die Künstler gegenseitig inspirieren. Das intensive Licht und die Farben des Südens üben, insbesondere für Paul Klee, einen nachhaltigen Einfluss auf das weitere Schaffen aus. “Die Farbe hat mich. Ich brauche nicht nach ihr zu haschen. Sie hat mich für immer, ich weiß das. Das ist der glücklichen Stunde Sinn: ich und die Farbe sind eins. Ich bin Maler.“ (Paul Klee, in: Giedion-Welcker 2004, S. 43). Der Prozess, das Gesehene zu abstrahieren – vornehmlich Stadt- und Landschaftsansichten –, in geometrische Strukturen zu überführen, die plan auf der Bildfläche entwickelt werden, zeigt sich exemplarisch in dem vorliegenden Aquarell, welches 1915, zwischen Tunisreise und Einzug als Soldat im Ersten Weltkrieg, entstanden ist. Hinter dem strukturierten Bildaufbau und der Ablehnung der Perspektive steht auch das Werk von Paul Cézanne, das Klee aufgrund seiner Reduktion sehr schätzte. Bereits zwei Jahre vor dem denkwürdigen Aufenthalt in Nordafrika hatte Paul Klee dieses Raster entwickelt, das ihn in den folgenden drei Jahrzehnten immer wieder in abgewandelter Form beschäftigte. Das hier gewählte impressionistische Ausschnittsprinzip verdichtet die in Tunesien ausgebildete Farbkomposition, ein rosafarbenes Element wird zum Bildmittelpunkt, eingerahmt von unterschiedlich schwarz schattierten Kuben, die in einem engen Beziehungsgeflecht die umliegenden Farben leuchten lassen. Die Assoziationsmöglichkeiten der Farben der Natur und der gebäudeähnlichen Formen, die Analogie von organischen Phänomenen und architektonischem Bildaufbau lassen, bei aller abstrahierenden Reduktion, immer wieder spielerisch Momente der Erzählung und Gegenstandsreferenz durchschimmern.
