AN IRISH GEORGE II MAHOGANY CARD TABLECIRCA 1740 74cm high, 89cm wide, 43cm deep (when closed)For a closely related example of card table, but without the central shell carving to the frieze, see The Knight of Glin and James Peill, Irish Furniture, Yale University Press, 2007, page 237, figure 133. Condition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions, old chips and splits commensurate with age and use. some old repairs. Some additional indented marks to the edge of the top.(see images) Some relatively minor evidence of old worm to the underside of the top. Some of the pine blocks to the underside of the top may be later. There is a cabinet makers and retailers label attached to the underside which may not be original and is for a 19thc retailer/ maker. (see additional images) It looks to have been more recently glued to the underside possibly. There are areas of remnants of a dark coloured wax to the surface which does rub away. The table overall appears to have been cleaned but does retain reasonable colour although patina has been lost to a degree it may only be possible to improve with careful and experienced treatment. The edges of the interior surface have been cleaned and show evidence of surface filler. The hinges of the top are later replacements. There are filled holes and marks from previous hinges to the rear edges of the top (see additional images)The baize inset is a later and relatively recent replacement. The rear leg on attached to the hinged element has a crack through the upper part of it that has previously been glued but slightly inaccurately and could be easily done better. There are no other obvious old breaks to legs. The 'ear' brackets to the tops of the legs at the rear frieze and lacking. Some later re-gluing to joins of other 'ear' brackets. The carved shell terminal has previously been detached and re-glued. It has also been secured with a later screw from the reverse of the frieze. There is no clear evidence that the shell is later or associated and the shadow to the frieze supports it being original. The table is more pale in colour than it appears in the catalogue image. See additional images. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition.   Condition Report Disclaimer

Lot 105

AN IRISH GEORGE II MAHOGANY SECRETAIRE CABINET IN THE MANNER OF GILES GRENDEY, CIRCA 1740 The shaped mirror panel doors opening to an arrangement of drawers232cm high, 107cm wide, 55cm deep overallBy repute, The Barony of Inchiquin, County Clare, Ireland. Padraig Lucius Ambrose O'Brien, 17th Baron Inchiquin, The O'Brien, Chief of the Name, Prince of Thornand, (1900-1982) married Miss Allen, heiress to Moor Park, Ludlow, Shropshire. After the family estate was dispersed in 1950, Lady Inchiquin moved to a house in the hamlet of Betchcott, one part of the estate, where she died in 2012. This cabinet reputedly formed part of Lady Inchiquin's estate having been passed down in Lord Inchiquin's family. The O'Brien Chiefs were once the last Kings of Ireland centuries ago. On the Act of Union 1805 whereby the Irish House of Commons and Irish House of Lords gave up governing Ireland in favor of Great Britain, all ancient Irish titles were abolished. The O'Briens retained the title Baron Inchiquin because it was given by the King of England and therefor an English title and not and Irish one. Condition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions comensurate with age and use.Old chips and splits, some old repairs. Some metalware may have been replaced. There seem to be no alternate holes from alternate drawer handlesThe rear panels appear original but has been applied throughout with a black wash, as has the roof(top) (with a pale/ white wash) This cabinet appears to have been highly cleaned, restored and re-polished throughout. The colour overall is rich but relatively uniform. There is evidence of surface filler. There is no real evidence of patina or variation in colour. The mirror plates are later replaced. The panels to the reverse of the mirrored doors appears to match in terms of the timber but may be replaced or have been re-fitted using some later screws. The carved and gilded borders around the edge of the mirror plates have had the gilding refreshed. The gilding to the metalware throughout appears quite fresh and bright so atleast some of the metalware has likely had the gilding refreshed.  Some of the locks vary from eachother and there is evidence of repair to the timber adjacent to some of the locks. To the chest section there is a fillet of repair above each drawer front where the lock would engage (see images) suggesting they had each previously been forced open or had caused damage there. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition. Condition Report Disclaimer

A SWEDISH MINIATURE BUREAU BOOKCASEEARLY 18TH CENTURYVeneered in Alder root99.5cm high, 46cm wide, 34cm deep In the early 18th century, Swedish cabinet makers in the region around Mälardalen started veneering furniture in Alder root (as seen on this miniature bookcase). Influenced by English tastes of the period, the use of this timber was an attempt to mimic figured walnut popular in London at the time but scarce in Sweden. Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches, and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Various old chips and splits. Some sections of veneer re-stuck and some old veneer repairs (see images). Metalware appears original. No key present, all locks are open.Various flaking and losses to the cream painted interior of the cabinet, fall and drawers. This reveals the earlier blue coat of paint. Some larger splits to the back board of the cabinet. Evidence of old worm (see images for details). Section of replacement timber let into one of the rear feet. Some splits to bottoms of drawers. The top drawer with some blue ink stains to the interior. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition.      Condition Report Disclaimer

That said many of these comments on condition are only apparent on close up inspection. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition Condition Report Disclaimer

Lot 270

A GEORGE III GREEN AND POLYCHROME PAINTED SIDE CABINET CIRCA 1790The circular door panel painted in the manner of Angelica Kauffman99cm high, 120cm wide, 42.5cm deepCondition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions, wear and some fading comensurate with age and use. Some old splits and chips, some minor losses. Old wear and loss to the gilding and painted surface in areas. Some additional indented marks. Some visible vertical splits to the door and side panels, this is likely mainly where the underlying elements of timber meet each other/ are joined. There is some old and fairly minimal use of filler and paint to disguise some splits and some paint loss. The surface overall appears to be in surprisingly and pleasingly original condition. There are some hairline cracks and craqueleure to the central painted panel of the door. It seems likely that the central painted scene of the door was painted onto a thin material and then applied to the underlying timber panel. There are some minor areas of lifting to the painted panel. The painting throughout the interior also appears original. The lock appears original and the key present, however the lock is seized and will require some attention to operate again, The thin brass fitting for the key escutcheon is present but detached. There is old wear and loss to the timber around the key hole/ escutcheon which has caused the key escutcheon to not be possible to remain in place. Some additional scratching, discoloration and indentation to the top as expected. Some discoloration seems very much on the surface only and may be carefully cleaned. The rear panels and feet all appear original. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition.  Condition Report Disclaimer

Y A VICTORIAN EBONY AND IVORY INLAID MUSIC CABINETATTRIBUTED TO OWEN JONES, CIRCA 1865The central section with five long vertical divisions for music folios, above a fall-front opening to shelves for sheet music, the shelves with tooled leather edges for Operas, Miscellaneous, Sacred112cm high, 108cm wide, 44.5cm deep Jackson and Graham were one of the leading Victorian cabinet makers of the second half of the nineteenth century and were probably the most important. Their work was of the highest quality, showcasing the most innovative designers of the day and winning many prizes at international exhibitions. Owen Jones and B.J. Talbert designed for the Paris Exhibitions of 1867 and 1878, Jones for the Vienna Exhibition of 1873. Designers at the firm included Alfred Lorimer and Eugene Prinot, Jackson and Graham also made designs by R.W. Edis, C.L. Eastlake and Talbert. Special commissions were undertaken for Queen Victoria, Napoleon III, the Grand Khedive at Cairo and the Royal Palace in Siam. Owen Jones was highly influential in his promotion of formal, stylised pattern, in direct opposition to the popular taste for the flamboyantly naturalistic. Jones also designed entire interiors for important clients, including the connoisseur Alfred Morrison, both at Fonthill and Carlton House Terrace. Amongst Jones's designs for Fonthill was a well documented semi-circular display cabinet in ebony inlaid with ivory for the display of Morrison's collection of Chinese porcelain. The lower door panels of the cabinet all incorporate Morrison's initials in a central ivory inlaid monogram.  Jones was also responsible for the decoration and furnishings at The Priory, 21 North Bank, Regent's Park in 1863 for the novelist George Eliot and partner G.H. Lewes. The ivory inlaid monogram incorporating two 'G's to the panel of the present music cabinet bears distinct similarities to the monogram inlaid panels of the display cabinet at Fonthill. It is tempting to speculate that Owen Jones may have designed the present cabinet for George Eliot and G.H.Lewes as part of the new decorative scheme for The Priory, incorporating their first initials in the monogram.   Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Some old chips and splits. Some small sections of moulding re-stuck and minor old repairs to inlay. Some ivory stringing to the escutcheon lacking. Key present and operates lock. The fabric inlay to the shelves is possibly later. they bear the expected fraying and wear (see images). Mirror plates with some minor depletion and small grey spots. A GEORGE II BURR WALNUT AND FEATHER BANDED CHEST ON CHESTIN THE MANNER OF GILES GRENDEY, CIRCA 1735176cm high, 105cm wide, 56cm deep The selective choice of veneers, original fire gilded rococo handles and fine execution of the feather banding and dove-tail joints firmly suggest that attribution is possible to one of the most notable makers of the period, such as Giles Grendey. Giles Grendey (d.1780) cabinet-maker and chair-maker, established a successful and long-lived business at St John's Square, Clerkenwell around 1720. His output ranged from sober walnut and mahogany pieces, to the flamboyant, such as the carved mahogany armchairs supplied circa 1740-45 for Gunton Park, Norfolk and the spectacular scarlet japanned furniture, totalling some eighty pieces, supplied around 1740 to the Duke of Infantado for Lazcano, near San Sebastian (C.Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, pp. 31-32 and pp. 238-249, figs. 429-452).Condition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions consistent with age and use. Some old repairs and replacements to veneers, including to the corner of the base, around the drawers.Evidence of old worm. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition Condition Report Disclaimer
