C, K9v and K10r ink stain, just touching text, some spotting or mostly light foxing, occasional staining, lightly browned, new endpapers, contemporary half calf, sympathetically rebacked, spine gilt and with red morocco label, corners worn, covers rubbed and scuffed, [Cagle 797; Oxford pp.145-146; cf. Bitting p.262 (second edition, 1818)], 12mo, Printed for Samuel Bagster, No.15, Paternoster-Row, By J. Moyes, Greville Street, 1817.⁂ The rare first edition. The last copy at auction we can trace was in 2010. Kitchiner (1775-1827), optician, cook, and best-selling food writer. He travelled around with his 'portable cabinet of taste', which contained his mustards and sauces, and himself created 'Wow-Wow Sauce'. The present work contains one of the earliest recipes for what we now know as 'crisps' ('Potatoes fried in Slices or Shavings').
