A George IV rosewood and bone inlaid table cabinet, circa 1825, hinged lid opening to a quilted silk interior, two cabinet doors enclosing four drawers, fitted with white metal sewing tools, a drawer of watercolours, marble slab and glass dishes, a drawer of eight metal mounted cut glass bottles and six French plaster plaques over a drawer fitted with a writing slope and two inkwells, one lid silver hallmarked for 1829, 64cm high, 38cm wide, 28cm deep. Provenance: The White House, Marlborough.
A George II mahogany bureau bookcase, circa 1750, swan neck pediment with carved flowerheads, a pair of twin field panelled doors opening to adjustable shelves, hinged fall opening to an arrangement of small drawers and pigeon holes, two short and three long drawers, ogee bracket feet, 244cm high, 107cm wide, 57cm deep. Whilst the design of this bureau bookcase bears relation to the designs of English cabinet makers William Hallet and William Kent, this example also bears particular similarity to Irish bookcases of the period. The inclusion of architectural elements alongside characteristic carved flowerheads exemplified by this bureau bookcase can be seen on several examples included in the book ‘Irish Furniture, The Knight of Glin & James Peill, Yale University Press 2007’ For specific examples see pages 55, 56, 121, 251, 254. A carved giltwood wall mirror, in George III style, 19th century, surmounted by rocaille, flanked by opposing ho-ho birds, triple mirror plate within an elaborate C-scroll and S-scroll frame, 153cm high, 150cm wide. A George III mahogany harewood and gonzalo alves cross banded ‘breakfast’ table, circa 1760, in the manner of Thomas Chippendale, the rectangular top with a central oval reserve decorated with a marquetry flower, quill pen, note paper and counters, above a single frieze drawer with cast gilt brass knob handles, above an concave fronted cupboard with fret pattern brass wirework panels with silk pleats, square section legs with moulded feet enclosing castors, 75cm high, 101.5cm wide extended, 66cm deep. Provenance: The 6th Earl of Craven. The design of this table bears a close resemblance to a pattern illustrated in Thomas Chippendale, Gentleman & Cabinet Makers Director, pl.XXXIII, 1754. For related examples see Lot 251, Hackwood Park, April 1998, Christie’s. An example exists in the Chippendale Collection at Harewood House Two similar examples supplied by Chippendale to The Earl of Dumfries, Dumfries House, 1750’s. An Anglo-Indian Vizagapatam penworked ivory veneered sandalwood box, circa 1785, of rectangular form, the hinged cover with a central panel depicting a fort with trees within a ropework border, within further concentric borders of trailing foliage and flowers, the front, back and sides with conforming views, the interior fitted with a subsidiary raised box to the left, 9cm high, 32cm wide, 24cm deep. Note: See Amin Jaffer, Luxury Goods from India, V & A Publications, 2002, page 80, for a miniature bureau cabinet with very similar decorative motifs
