COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, British Historical Medals, Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester (1532/3-1588), statesman, Dismissal as Governor-General of the United Provinces and Departure from Belgium, cast Bronze Medal, undated (1587), by Anton König (? signed AK in monogram), bearded bust three-quarters right, plume of feathers in cap, ROBERTVS DVDLEIVS COM LEYC BELG GVBR, rev sheep dog, its head turned, in hilly landscape with sheep, + NON GREGEM SED INGRATOS, in exergue INVITVS DESERO, 51mm (MI 141/102; MIM pl,X, 5 reverse; vL I, 375; cf Eimer 54). Good very fine, light colour, scarce. A restitutional medal, Hawkins (MI 1885) states, “This medal is not of the time, but probably an imitation of the last century. The artist’s name is therefore somewhat uncertain”. The reverse depicts Leicester as “the dog who unwillingly quits his flock”. The exergual legend matches that on the specimen in the Royal Cabinet, and has been corrected from INVITVS DESPRO INVITVS DESERO. Sold with old Dutch collection ticket.

Cabinet Photograph of George Smith, Chaplain at Rorkes Drift 1879, the photograph shows smith in uniform wearing pill box style peaked cap. Above is written with his details and the date of his death. Image shows him wearing campaign medals. The photograph is mounted into a later card frame. Measures 19cm x 12cm approx. ** Born in Docking, Norfolk in 1845, 'Padre' George Smith served as a missionary in South Africa from 1870. As an assistant army chaplain, and therefore a non-combatant, Smith played a supportive role in the defence of Rorkes Drift, where he distributed ammunition to the soldiers. In Alphonse de Neuville's famous painting of the defence of Rorkes Drift, Smith can be seen handing out ammunition to the right hand centre of the painting.
Three Victorian Cabinet Photographs of Captain Percy Shawe Smith 13th Light Dragoons who was the last surviving officer who rode in the Charge of the Light Brigade at Balaclava, Captain R M Bond-Shelton 12th Lancers who was the last survivor of the wreck of the troopship Birkenhead which sank off the coast of South Africa in 1852 and General Sir Mowbray Thomson K.C.I.E who was the last survivor of the three who escaped the massacre of Cawnpore during the Indian Mutiny,June 27th 1857. Photographs are all mounted into later card frames. Various sizes. Also accompanied by a signed cabinet photograph of early stage and screen Shakespearean actor Henry Ainley. (4 items)
Queen Victoria Signed Commission Document, the document has original inked Queen Victoria signature to the top corner. Commission is appointing a Captain Webb to the rank of Major in the army 1846, document is dated 1851. Document has been mounted in a glazed frame along with a cabinet photograph of Queen Victoria. Frame measures 39.5cm x 59.5cm. On the reverse of the frame is a short history of Major Webb which states he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant on 12th May 1812, he was present at the bombardment of Antwerp. He fought at the battle of Waterloo where he was wounded in action. He later served in Ireland during the troubles in the early 1820's.
