Les Ressources de Quinola, 1st edition, Paris: Hyppolite Souverain, 1842, author's initialled inscription to half-title, 'Cabinet de Mlle Dumaige rue Royale H B[alza]c' (partially cropped by binder), heavy spotting throughout, a few minor clear tape repairs to margins without loss, upper outer corner of pp. 115/116 torn away with loss of page numbers only, book ticket of Rob[ert] de Billy to front pastedown, contemporary vellum-backed boards with indistinct manuscript library number to head of spine, author and title stamped lettering and 'Mlle Dumaige' stamped at foot, rubbed and some edge wear, slightly split along joints, together with:Les Ressources de Quinola, 1st edition, Paris: Hyppolite Souverain, 1842, lightly spotted, untrimmed, original green paper wrappers, spine extremities and joints slightly worn, some light dust-soiling, both 8vo, housed together in a custom-made chemise of grey boards with gilt-titled brown morocco spine and card slipcaseQty: (2)Provenance: Mlle Dumaige was a bookseller in the rue Royale in Orléans, who flourished in the 1840s. Two type cabinet with brass type, comprising a six-drawer varnished wood type cabinet and six-drawer metal type cabinet, containing Devon 10pt, 12pt, 16pt, 22pt & 30pt, Rutland 10pt & 16pt, Kent 12pt, Grotesque 8pt, and three other serif typefaces (10pt, 16pt & 26pt), each set including a few spacers etc., one drawer to metal type cabinet lacking knob handle, together with four plastic trays of brass type containing Kent 8pt & 16pt, Times Roman 8pt and Gloucester 6pt, plus three 10cm (4 inch) type holdersQty: (a carton)Footnote: Provenance: John Gardner (1944-2012). John Gardner of Borough Green, Kent served a six year apprenticeship with the long established firm of T.C. Woolnough & Son Ltd. at the Elephant and Castle between the years 1959-65. During this time he attended the London College of Printing, training under some of the leading binders of the day and undertaking City & Guilds examinations. He spent his whole working life restoring and binding books. He also contributed to several bookbinding journals, including Bookbinder - the journal of the Society of Bookbinders and also The New Bookbinder – the journal of Designer Binders.
