Its first live outing with Mott The Hoople was at the Pier Pavilion, Felixstowe, 3rd July that year. Its second was at the now-infamous concert at the Royal Albert Hall on 8th July. Mott were booked to play two nights at the prestigious venue but their 'over-enthusiastic' fans caused such damage to the Hall that the second night was cancelled. In March 1972, following this and disturbances from other bands' audiences, the venue decided to ban all rock concerts. However, the ban was short-lived.This Hammond featured in every Mott live concert, excluding those in the USA, and on all studio recordings – including the top-three charting UK single and band's fifth, breakthrough album, All The Young Dudes - until Verden left the group in January 1973. It was then used for various projects over the years before being back in the spotlight for Mott's 40th anniversary reunion concerts at the Hammersmith Apollo in October 2009 and the five-date tour in November 2013.The Hammond C3 organ is identifiable by its walled slides and sleeker, angular cabinet style. The internal components are otherwise largely identical to the earlier B3 model. The Eagle-shaped fitting to the back of the organ was bought by Verden in the early 1970's to cover a small hole to the organ casing. It was acquired from a militaria shop called 'Call To Arms' in London's Camden Passage, run by Chris Farlowe (who reached number 1 in the charts with the Jagger/Richards composition Out of Time in 1966).This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. The Putney: A Rare EMS VCS3 Mk1 Analogue Modular Synthesizer,1970/71,serial no. 3905, marked VCS3a, in hardwood cabinet with two panels providing controls for: three voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs), noise generator, input level, ring modulator, filter/oscillator, envelope shaper, reverberation, output filter, 16x16 patch board matrix with six resistive connecting pins (two incomplete or for testing purposes), joystick providing X/Y modulation control; reverse with power connector, stereo headphones output, scope, right/left signal outputs, two control outputs, keyboard output, two Hi. level inputs, and two Mic. outputs (600Ω), together with plug, 17 1/2in x 17in x 16in (44.5cm x 43cm x 40.5cm) overallFootnotes:Provenance:Acquired by the current owner who worked for Peter Zinovieff (1933–2021) at Electronic Music Studios from 1970-1972. Zinovieff was co-founder of EMS and was instrumental in the development of the VCS3 Synthesizer.Electronic Music Studios Ltd. (EMS) was formed in 1969 by Peter Zinovieff, Tristram Cary, and David Cockerell, partly to fund Zinovieff's experimental music studio. The VCS3 was nicknamed 'The Putney' after the location of Zinovieff's London home and was their first commercial product. When contemporary alternatives from early synthesizer companies such as Moog and Buchla would take up entire walls, EMS provided a comparatively compact version of the electronic studio, hence the name 'Voltage Controlled Studio' (VCS).The VCS3 was modular but made use of a 16x16 patch matrix which minimised the need for patch cables to connect separate modules. The synthesizer soon found its way on to the soundtracks of popular TV programmes like 'Doctor Who' and on numerous popular albums. The VCS3 was prominently featured on tracks by Pink Floyd (such as Dark Side of the Moon's 'On the Run'); The Who (the 'Won't Get Fooled Again' intro includes Lowrey organ processed through a VCS3); Roxy Music (where it was played by original member Brian Eno who went on to use it on his solo albums); Led Zeppelin (played by John Paul Jones on 'Four Sticks'); Hawkwind, King Crimson, Jean Michel Jarre, and Tangerine Dream, among others. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 143

Studio of Sir Joshua Reynolds, PRA,British 1723-1792-Portrait of Sir Charles Pratt, latterly 1st Earl Camden, PC (1714-1794), half-length, wearing judicial robes;oil on canvas, 72.5 x 60.5 cm.Provenance: Anon. sale, Sotheby’s, London, 8 April 1992, lot 48 (as by Sir Joshua Reynolds).Exhibited: Camden Town Hall (Mayor’s Parlour), London Borough of Camden, until 2022 (long loan).Literature: David Mannings and Martin Postle, 'Joshua Reynolds: A Complete Catalogue of his Paintings', New Haven/London, 2000, p.382, cat.1475a.Note: The present work is a version of a full-length standing portrait of Sir Charles Pratt, painted in 1764-5, which was reduced in 1968, and which is held at the Guidhall Art Gallery, London [no.40] (Mannings 1475). An additional small full-length version is in an American private collection, since 1925 (Mannings 1475b). Three other compositional variants of the sitter, by Reynolds, are known. One, painted in c.1765-66, resides in a private collection, with a half-length copy held at the National Portrait Gallery, London [NPG459] (Mannings 1476 and 1476a). The second, painted in 1767, is a three-quarter length seated version, which sold at Christie’s, 31 July 1947, lot 94 (Mannings 1477), a copy of which from Bayham Abbey was on the London art market in 1976 (Mannings 1477a). The third, dating to c.1778, also in a private collection, shows the sitter three-quarter length in private dress (Mannings 1478). The present work is probably the ‘Copy of Lord C J Prat [sic]’ mentioned in Reynolds’s memorandum of the week beginning 10 December 1764, which Mannings also mentions under 1475a.Charles Pratt was an English lawyer, judge and Whig politician who was first to hold the title of Earl Camden. As a lawyer and judge he was a leading proponent of civil liberties, championing the rights of the jury, and limiting the powers of the State. He held the offices of Chief Justice of the Common Pleas, Attorney-General and Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain, and was a confidante of Pitt the Elder, supporting Pitt in the controversies over John Wilkes and American independence. However, he clung to office himself, even when Pitt was out of power, serving in the cabinet for fifteen years and under five different prime ministers. During his life, Pratt played a leading role in opposing perpetual copyright, resolving the regency crisis of 1788 and in championing Fox's Libel Bill. He started the development of the settlement that was later to become Camden Town in London. With piercing grey eyes, he is here presented in his role as Lord Chancellor, wearing his red robes of the chief justice with a magnificent chain of office and the ‘SS’ collar. Aside from Reynolds, he was painted by several leading artists of the period, including Nathaniel Dance (NPG336), Thomas Hudson, and Thomas Gainsborough. Please refer to department for condition report
