Arthur Curtis was a native of Plymouth. In 1914 he tried to rejoin the Devon Regiment but was rejected on grounds of age. Eventually he served in India as Regimental Sergeant-Major of the 1st Garrison Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, which was formed in February 1916. Sold with a cabinet photograph of Curtis in the uniform of the Devons, and copied Medal Index Card which confirms entitlement to British War Medal only.
A 20th century Majestic Co, Hong Kong ebonised hardwood cabinet, the top opening to a deep section with removable cutlery storage, with engraved brass catch, below two short and three long drawers with recessed handles, all with decorative green silk lining; to the base two doors opening to a shelved section, the shelf removable, on four bracket feet; the cabinet decorated throughout with painted hardstones depicting figures in landscapes, fruit and other scenes, bears makers label to the back, 49.5cm wide, 73cm high, 30cm wide
A collectors 19th Century mahogany and inlaid cabinet:, bordered with boxwood, ebony and chequer strung lines, the top with an ebony and ivory dentil band and similar geometric lozenge frieze, having a fitted interior with an arrangement of twenty small drawers about a central cupboard with pierced fretwork shelves, enclosed by a door with ogee arch pointed lines, further enclosed by a pair of outer doors with geometric chequer lines, the integral stand with a gadrooned edge, on square tapered legs, terminating in spade feet, 50cm (1ft 7 3/4in) wide, 79cm (2ft 7in) high, 32cm (1ft 0 1/2in) deep.
An Edwardian mahogany and inlaid display cabinet on a stand:, bordered with boxwood lines and with ebony and boxwood chequer stringing, the upper part with a moulded dentil cornice, fitted with adjustable shelves enclosed by a pair of glazed panel doors, the bow-fronted stand fitted with three drawers in the shaped apron, on square tapered gaitered legs, 110cm (3ft 7 1/2in) wide, 201.5cm (6ft 7 1/4in) high.
An Edwardian mahogany and marquetry domed display cabinet on a stand:, of bowed breakfront outline, the domed arch centre with a moulded cornice and anthemion, husk and domed frieze, inset with a bevelled mirror, flanked by concave panels with ribbon tied pendant husks and Neo-Classical urns, having a bow-fronted glazed cabinet below with central drawer, flanked by a full length enclosed glazed cupboard to either side, the stand on square tapered gaitered legs, 144cm (4ft 8 3/4in) wide, 208cm (6ft 10in) high.
A Japanese black lacquer and gilt Shibyama decorated wall cabinet:, the panels with raised decoration of birds and insects amidst flowering foliate stems, heightened in stained and natural ivory and mother of pearl, the railed galleried top with domed ledge back, having fan, leaf and quatrefoil shaped gilt panels having further shaped panels to the sides, the upper shelf with a pair of sliding doors and open shelves below with small enclosed compartment to the centre shelf, Meiji period, 79cm (2ft 7in) wide, 98cm (3ft 2 1/2in) high.

A mahogany and inlaid wall mounted cabinet:, of canted design, having a central open compartment flanked by an enclosed cupboard to either side, crossbanded in satinwood bordered with boxwood and ebony lines, 77cm (2ft 6in) wide, 49.5cm (1ft 7 1/2in) high, stamped S & P B to lock, also a mahogany hanging cabinet, with open shelf above, enclosed by a fielded moulded panel door, 69cm ( 2ft 3in) wide, 59.5cm (1ft 11 1/2in) high.(2)
