A Jamaican specimen wood box by J Soulette, 1838, the inside of the lid with specimen wood cube marquetry, over a lift-out tray with six lidded compartments, pincushions and six open compartments, together with a plan of the marquetry in the base, detailing such woods as wild olive, mountain cabbage, bitterwood, logwood, candlewood, prickly yellow and coffee, signed 'J Soulette 1838(?)', 36cm wide 26cm deep 14.5cm high This box is one of a considerable group of similar boxes, worktables and larger furniture made in Jamaica in the first half of the 19th century. They are distinguished by their exclusive use of native Jamaican woods to create striking parquetry designs, and in most cases are accompanied by a diagrammatic key identifying the woods by their vernacular names. The best known exponent of this type of work was Ralph Turnbull, a Scottish immigrant who arrived in Jamaica with his two brothers about 1815. By the mid-1820s, Ralph had established an independent cabinet-making business in Kingston, Jamaica, and a good number of pieces bearing his trade label are known. He continued in business until the late 1850s and probably died about 1860. Employing at least sixty workmen in the 1830s, Turnbull ran a large workshop. It is likely that some of his employees went on to establish their own furniture-making concerns and made specimen wood furniture in the Turnbull style. William and James Pitkin might have been among their number; they certainly were among Turnbull's competitors in the 1830s. It is possible that the maker of the present box, J. Soulette, was also a former employee. The name Soulette is French in origin, but also occurs on several West Indian islands, including Jamaica. It has not so far been possible to trace a J. Soulette in the Jamaican archives, but information about his life and work might yet come to light.
