Richard Assheton Cross, 1st Viscount Cross, RAC was Home Secretary between 1874 and 1880 and 1885 and 1886. The photgravure ( 58 x 45cm) in this lot depicts a cabinet meeting with Lord Salisbury as Prime Minister, also included are two futher photographs of RAC and a photograph of William Cross MP, his son (3) Notes: Prehaps the most notable political success of RAC was the Artizans and Labourers Dwellings Act 1875 (known as the First Cross Act) which was the first attempt at urban renewal for working class areas in industrial Britain.

Lot 1394

A Regency mahogany side cabinet, with later slate top above the inverted breakfront fitted with a series of drawers and cupboards, the side cupboards flanked by flat pilasters with metal capitals and all raised on a plinth base. Width 158 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The slate top is in very good condition with no issues. The three frieze drawers are in good order and run smoothly. If you look very carefully at the drawers you will notice that at some point there have been handles attached. These would not have been original which is presumably why they have been removed. You will see faint circular silhouette marks where the handles have been. The three doors are in good order as are the brass grilles and metalwork. The plinth base has some minor scuffs and marks as one would expect but again no real issues. The backboards are original. We can see no evidence of any woodworm.

Lot 1401

A Continental marble topped side cabinet, with parquetry side panels and fitted with two frieze drawers, with shaped apron beneath and raised on cabriole legs terminating in sabot feet. Width 69 cm, depth 38 cm, height 72 cm.

Lot 1433

A 19th century mahogany bedside cabinet, with rear carrying handle and recessed top with single door with brass knob handle and carrying handles to either side and raised on moulded legs of square section. Width 45 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The height to the top of the rear handle is just under 32”, width 17½”, depth 15½”. The cabinet is structurally sound. The top is not significantly marked and there are no splits. The sides of the piece have minor old stress fractures but no significant issues. The door is not warped. The legs are all in good condition and there is no evidence of any repairs or restoration. The colour is uniform and generally good.

Lot 1438

A Victorian style boulle marquetry side cabinet, of large form with marble top, single panelled door flanked by canted angles and all with applied metal mouldings. Width 92 cm, height 138 cm, depth 42 cm. CONDITION REPORT: We would have thought that that this cabinet dates from the 1970's. It is definitely not Victorian.

The doors are not warped but they meet correctly in the middle. The condition of the cabinet is generally good with no significant issues. There is a small veneer loss to the frieze at the left hand side upwards and to the left of the door hinge. Other than this the piece is in very good order with no significant problems. Width across cornice 76 cm. Depth 53 cm. Height 104 cm.

Width across waist 66 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The cabinet is in generally very good order. The polish is in good condition and the colour good also. The doors are not warped. The interior is in good condition. The lock is present. We have the key but the lock is stiff and will not turn. The two drawers are in good condition. All legs are in good order with no issues. The backboards are original. Height 140 cm, depth at top 37.5 cm, depth at waist 39.5 cm, width at top 61 cm, width at waist 65.5 cm, width across knees (maximum) 70 cm, depth at knees maximum 44.5 cm.

Lot 1594

An Edwardian inlaid mahogany display cabinet, with blind dentil cornice above a pair of glazed doors enclosing shelves and all raised on tapered legs of square section terminating in spade feet. Width 114 cm. CONDITION REPORT: Width at cornice 114 cm, depth at cornice 43 cm, width across front of cabinet 107 cm, depth at same point 39 cm. The condition of the cabinet is generally very good. There are no issues with the cornice or frieze. The doors are not warped. There is no cracked glass. The lower panels are a little dirty however a damp cloth will wipe away the mildew. The centre edging strip has two small losses. The piece is structurally sound. There is slight movement at the leg joints which is fairly typical for a cabinet of this sort.

Lot 1665

A late 19th century bamboo and lacquered cabinet, with shelved and mirrored superstructure, the base with glazed doors enclosing shelves and raised on splayed feet. Width 102 cm, depth 56 cm, height 196 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The cabinet is structurally sound and does not appear to have any new elements. The mirror plate is in good order. The superstructure is also sound with no significant issues. The lacquered panels are all in reasonably good order. There is some deterioration to the lacquer work but no major issues. The second mirror is in good order also with only minor perishing to the silvering. The top of the base does have some issues. The right hand side is in generally good order but there are some scuffs and losses to the centre of the top below the mirror and moving towards the front. The lacquer to the left hand side of this is also discoloured and the gilding rubbed and faded. The left hand side panel is in good order. The right hand side panel has fading to the lacquer and some rubbing to the gilding. All of the bamboo is a little marked and scratched as one can see from our images. The shelf surfaces are in reasonably good order. There are some scuffs to the top two shelves surfaces. The bottom shelf has more major scuffing and marking.

Lot 1747

A Regency mahogany Gillows style sideboard, with bowfront and fitted with a series of twelve drawers with wooden knob handles and cockbeading to each drawer front and raised on turned legs. Width 157 cm, depth 56 cm, height 94 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The sideboard is in good original condition. The top is not warped and there are no cracks. The crossbanded side edges are intact. There are some old ring marks and water spots and fading to the polish but no real issues with the top surface. The sides of the cabinet are in good order again with no splits. The centre bowfronted drawers are all in generally good order with no significant losses. The bottom door has a missing knob handle. The drawer linings are oak. The left-hand configuration of drawers is as follows: the top two drawers are actually one, the bottom two drawer fronts hinge and are actually a cupboard. The same is true of the right-hand side. The left-hand cupboard door (modelled as two drawers) has stress fractures to the veneers which should be visible on our image. The right-hand drawers are in good order. The feet are all original and the piece is structurally sound.

Lot 1845

An Edwardian inlaid mahogany bedside cabinet, with rear gallery and single door and raised on tapered legs of square section terminating in spade feet. Width 38 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The cabinet is structurally sound with no loose joints. The top surface and gallery are in good order with no issues. The door is not warped and closes as it should. The sides are in good condition with no splits and only the odd minor surface scratch. All legs are in good order with no repairs, damage or restoration.

Lot 1860

A Georgian mahogany shallow cupboard, with boxwood strung edge and a pair of panelled crossbanded doors opening to adjustable shelves and raised on bracket feet. Width 114 cm. CONDITION REPORT: Height 123 cm, depth 30 cm. The top of the cabinet is in generally good order with no veneer splits. There is one ring mark and other very minor blemishes. The boxwood strung edge is in good order to the front and left hand side. There is one very tiny loss right at the rear of the right hand side return running for +/- 5 mm. This is not significant. The doors are not warped. The lock is present, but we do not have the key. The door fronts are in generally good condition with only minor marks around the keyhole area and two small scuffs to the left hand door front. There is a further minor scratch to the bottom of the right hand door front. The bracket feet are in good order. There is no evidence of any woodworm.

Lot 1893

A Victorian mahogany chiffonier, with carved and shelved upstand, moulded edge and three arched panelled doors flanked by corbals and raised on a plinth base. Width 165 cm, height 161 cm, depth 50.5 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The chiffonier is in generally very good order. The rear upstand and shelf have no issues and are of good colour. The scrolling supports are in good order also. The top is flat and has no splits or any significant scratching. The sides of the cabinet are not split. All doors close as they should with no warping. There are scuffs and marks around the lock escutcheons and a small scratch to the centre door panel. All locks are present. We do not have a key. The doors are not locked. The plinth base is in generally good condition all round with only minor marks as one would expect. The rear panels are all original.

Lot 1901

An Edwardian inlaid mahogany display cabinet, in two sections, with mirror back flanked on either side by a glazed cupboard and with bowfronted base fitted with drawers and cupboards and raised on cabriole legs. Width 136 cm.

Lot 1934

A Dutch walnut display cabinet, of bombe form, with pair of doors opening to shaped shelves, the base fitted with three drawers with brass drop handles with shaped and pierced backplates and similar lock escutcheons and all raised on front carved lion paw feet. Height 197 cm, width 153 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The cabinet is in generally good condition with no significant issues. The rear right hand return moulding to the cornice is missing. This is right at the back and runs for about 7 cm. The doors are not warped. They meet in the middle. There are no cracked panes of glass. There are some scratches, scuffs and marks to the interior paintwork. The veneers are in generally good order with only minor stress fractures as one would expect. The bottom drawer has some veneer stress fractures. All handles appear to be original. The feet are in good condition. The piece is structurally sound. Height 197 cm, depth at cornice excluding carving 34 cm (brackets including carving 40 cm). Depth at waist 32.5 cm, depth from wall to very front part of paw foot 45 cm.

Lot 1943

A 19th century French side cabinet stamped with the retailer James Winter Soho London, marked to the rear Gueret Freres, 216 Lafayette, Paris, also stamped to the lock, with rear upstand, breakfront and fitted with a drawer, cupboards and open shelves and raised on a plinth base. Width 174 cm (see illustration).
