Sicily, Siculo-Punic (c. 320-300 BC) Silver Tetradrachm, Head of Tanit-Persephone facing left, crowned with reeds and wearing pearl necklace and triple-pendant earring, surrounded by four dolphins, R. Horse’s head facing left, palm tree with two clusters of dates behind, Punic legend ‘MMHNT’ below.Extremely Fine. Attractive cabinet tone with iridescent hues.(Jenkins, Punic 183 (O53/R161); SNG Lloyd 1633 (same dies); Hunterian 7 (same dies)).17.0g.Ex Spink.Footnote: This impressive silver tetradrachm was probably struck at the Siculo-Punic mint of Entella, and bears the inscription ‘MMHNT’, translating to ‘People of the Camp’, implying these coins were issued to pay troops fighting for Carthage. These tetradrachms coincide with a period of turmoil in Sicily, stemming from the assault of Agathokles, the Tyrant of Syracuse, on Carthaginian territories in 311 BC. Carthage responded with a massive military campaign and took back almost all the island by 310 BC, eventually laying siege to Syracuse. As a last resort Agathokles launched a counterattack on the city of Carthage itself (a tactic the Romans would use to great effect during the Second Punic War a century later). In a foreshadowing of history, the Carthaginians were forced pull back their army to defend the homeland, but in this case, they were successful. Agathokles retreated to Sicily with a bloody nose in 307 BC, and after peace treaties, permitted to keep control over Syracuse.
Sicily, Syracuse, Agathokles (317-289 BC), AR Tetradrachm, 16.6g, 305-295 BC, head of Kore right, wreathed with corn, rev. AAOKE[O] in exergue, Nike standing right, erecting trophy of arms, a hammer in her right hand, triskeles on right, monogram on left (SNG Copenhagen 764; SNG ANS 664), reverse a little off centre, almost extremely fine, with attractive old cabinet tone.Footnote: With the usurpation of Agathokles in 317 BC, Syracuse once more monopolised the right of coinage for the whole of Sicily, even more distinctly than in the time of Dionysios. Yet the reign of Agathokles, as noted by Malcolm Bell (Morgantine Studies I, 1981) “was a watershed for the arts in Sicily, just as it was for politics. The change from a conservative late-classical style to the new modes of the early-Hellenistic period came very quickly, within the space of a decade, and it coincided with the replacement of democratic government by the new monarchy. It is clearly perceptible in the coins that... document the full acceptance of early-Hellenistic style.” Depicted often as a cruel and unscrupulous adventurer and tyrant, Agathokles achieved little of lasting historical importance; indeed after his death anarchy erupted both in Syracuse, where a damnatio memoriae was decreed, and in other places that had been under his rule (Diod. Sic. 21. 18). Nonetheless, his patronage of the arts left a legacy of beauty as embodied by a small number of surviving works of art from his reign, and smaller but no less wonderful objects such as this stunning coin.
