In order to try and recreate the rich and highly finished effect of oriental lacquer work, European cabinet makers turned to John Stalker and George Parker's 1688 Treatise of Japanning and Varnishing which soon became a key reference work, since it contained not only recipes for producing the various different colours but also patterns of Chinese figures, plants and gardens which could be adapted as necessary. European 'japanning' was popular until the end of the eighteenth century and was often used in bedroom apartments in the decoration of mirrors, stands and bureau cabinets such as the present example. As a result of its extravagant decoration a piece such as this could be displayed either open, to reveal its sumptuous interior, or closed where its mirrored doors would give a sense of depth to the rest of the room.Whist 'japanning' was a popular form of decoration in the early 18th century, green japanned furniture is far rarer than the more documented examples in red or black. Attributing cabinet makers of japanned bureau-cabinets of this quality is difficult as very few indeed were executed by known makers or recorded; Giles Grendey and John Belchier are the most well documented. Comparisons can be made with the red and gilt japanned bureau-cabinet at Erddig which has been attributed to John Belchier along with the Count Hamilton blue and gilt japanned bureau cabinet which was also attributed to John Belchier and sold at Christie's, London, Important English Furniture, 30 November 2000, lot 50.For comparable black japanned bureau-cabinet examples see Bonhams, Los Angeles, Fine European Decorative arts, 22 June 2015, lot 2099 and Bonhams, London, New Bond Street, Fine English Furniture, 3 June 2015, lot 108. The design of this pair of mirrors can be compared to girandoles supplied by William France and John Bradburn to Sir Lawrence Dundas for his London home at 19 Arlington Street. They were part of an extensive renovation and refurbishment of all the Dundas properties carried out under the direction of Robert Adam who employed the most renowned cabinetmakers, and resulted in what is now recognised as the one of the greatest collections of 18th century furniture. These mirrors are now at Aske Hall in Yorkshire.William France started his career working for Vile and Cobb (first recorded in Cobbs's accounts in 1759), before taking over the business in 1764 when Vile retired. Although Cobb continued in business on his own account, William France and his colleague, the cabinet maker John Bradburn, took over the business. This proved to be a successful partnership and their customers included the royal family who subsequently granted them the Royal Warrant in July 1764. Other commissions included for Kenwood House, Syon House, Burlington House and The Vyne.
