LKG XIII 172b. - Sehr seltene erste separate Ausgabe, ein wichtiges Werk in der Geschichte der Geologie und Petrologie, das 1786 mit dem Preis der Russischen Akademie der Wissenschaften ausgezeichnet wurde und wahrscheinlich die erste Klassifizierung von Gesteinsarten überhaupt darstellt. Erstmals veröffentlicht als Sonderdruck ein Jahr zuvor in der Reihe "Physikalische Arbeiten der einträchtigen Freunde in Wien", herausgegeben von dem Mineralogen Ignaz Born. Der österreichische Naturforscher Karl Maria Haidinger (1756-1796) war zunächst Adjunkt des königlichen Naturalienkabinetts in Wien, bevor er Professor für Bergbau an der Akademie in Chemnitz (Ungarn) wurde. Später wurde er zum Bergbauinspektor des Berg- und Münzamts in Wien ernannt. - Titelbl. mit hs. Beitzeintrag und verso mit Annotation in Kugelschreiber. Letzte 2 Bll. mit restaurierten Fehlstellen im oberen weißen Rand. Etwas gebräunt. Geology - With woodcut title vignette. Plain cont. wrappers (stained and somewhat creased, with backings). - Very rare first separately published edition, an important work in the history of geology & petrology, which won the prize of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1786, and is probably the first classification of rock types ever. First published as extract a year earlier in the series "Physikalische Arbeiten der einträchtigen Freunde in Wien", edited by the mineralogist Ignaz Born. The Austrian naturalist Karl Maria Haidinger (1756-1796) was first an adjunct to the royal natural history cabinet in Vienna, before becoming professor of mining at the academy in Chemnitz, Hungary. Later he was appointed mining inspector by the Bureau of Mining and Mints in Vienna. - Title page with handwritten ownership entry and annotation in ballpoint pen on verso. Last 2 fols. with restored losses in upper white margin. Somewhat browned.
