CONDITION REPORT: All 8 chairs are structurally sound and could be used in their current state without the need for any cabinet work. They look to have been through a workshop in recent times and probably when re-upholstered. Perhaps 15 to 20 years ago or so. The upholstery is in good condition and the seats firm and if the colour scheme fits there is no need for re-covering. All chairs have had minor repairs all of which are effective. The most significant repair which is again fully serviceable is to one carver rear leg which has had a break. There are no other leg breaks, simply small, localised repairs and replacement blocks etc. As stated, the backs are sound and secure and there are no significantly loose joints.

Lot 1581

An early George III figured walnut secretaire bookcase, the upper part fitted three shelves enclosed by a pair of bevelled mirror panelled doors and fitted two candle slides, the base with brown leather lined secretaire drawer enclosing fitted interior with six small drawers, two short and two long drawers under on bracket feet. 193 cm high, 112 cm wide, 50 cm deep (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: In our opinion the top and bottom are not associated. The backboards on the top section and bottom section follow through. The shelves are actually stained pine. They are clearly not original. The shelf supports are also non original and appear to have been moved in any event. The interior may well have had an entirely different configuration and may have been pigeon holes, shelves and apertures. The insides of the upper doors are oak panels. The top may be slightly lighter in colour than the base but this is fairly marginal and if anything is likely to be caused by sun. The secretaire pigeon holes are oak. The small drawers are oak lined and based but have mahogany fronts. All other drawer linings are oak. The handles are later replacements. There is evidence of further handle holes behind the current ones. All locks are present and fit the apertures but whether they are original or not is not possible to say. We have no keys. The left hand front bracket foot has a slither of veneer missing we have the piece. The cabinet has clearly been restored within probably the last 15-20 years, probably when the leather was replaced and the handles etc. The height of the base at the tallest part of the top edge moulding is 92 cm. Clearly there is a slight recess into which the top section fits. The depth of the top section at the cornice is 49.6 cm. The depth to the outer edge of the door is just under 44 cm. The interior depth is 40.7 cm. The pediment is fixed.

Lot 165

An early 19th century Pinxton porcelain circular cabinet plate, finely enamelled in colours with a vase of flowers to centre within gilded floral rim. Diameter 22 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The plate is free from any repairs or restoration. There are no hairline cracks. There are two small rim nibbles around the gilt edge and further rubbing to the gilding at this point. The gilt border is in generally good order however there are some losses to the gilding increasingly so on the way down towards the centre of the plate. You will also notice some scratches and paint losses to the main decoration, particularly to the three bottom yellow flowers and in the buff area above the still life. Whilst the plate has a label verso suggesting it is Pinxton, we have had a suggestion that it may indeed be Coalport due to the indentations on the rim.

Lot 899

A carnival model organ and drum automaton, fitted with electric light bulbs and painted in bright enamel colours, with tin roof. Height 102 cm, width 107 cm, depth 50 cm. CONDITION REPORT: When the item is plugged in the majority of the lights do light up. The electric motor also runs and this operates the two drums and the drummer. We have not had any sound out of the organ but we do not really know how this operates. The speaker at the rear of the cabinet does have wiring to it and there is a Jack plug on the end of this wiring. Perhaps the sound would have been from a recording rather than through the actual organ itself. We think that this is probably the case.
