Chiswel, 1684, opening four leaves and four contents leaves at end supplied in facsimile, some marks and light overall browning, modern quarter calf, 12mo Sold with all faults not subject to return. *Circus. A large and rare archive of photographs of the circus of 'Lord' George Sanger, late 19th and early 20th century, containing over 150 images from cartes de visite, cabinet cards, large-format photographs, small snapshots, etc., showing circus performers training, relaxing, travelling, etc., a few showing lions, horses, etc., sporadic captioning, mostly loose and some with creasing and tears, including one small photograph album and a torn programme 'Lord' George Sanger (1825-1911) was an English showman and circus proprietor. He ran shows and circuses throughout much of the nineteenth century with his brother John. He retired in 1905, selling off his zoo and circus effects which were auctioned by circus auctioneer Tom Norman. In 1911 he was murdered with a hatchet at his home by employee Herbert Charles Cooper, for unknown reasons. Cooper then committed suicide. (file box)

A George III painted satinwood Pembroke table, probably later decorated, the oval drop-leaf top with kingwood banding and painted with a central group of Venus and two cherubs with doves, with floral borders and angel masks, above a frieze drawer, the base with urns, leaves and flowers on brass caps and leather roller castors, the underside stamped with workman's initials 'IC', 71.3cm high, 94.4 x 79.5cm (open). The initials 'IC' might relate to Isaac Greenwood who was a cabinet maker for Gillows and made a variety of furniture. In Aug. 1780 he made 'satten wood' Pembroke tables. See Susan E. Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, volume two, pp.240-242 for a full discussion.
