KUINDZHI ARKHIP: (1842-1910) Russian Painter. A good signed and inscribed cabinet photograph by Kuindzhi, in Cyrillic. The Atelier A. Pasetti image shows the Russian Painter in a head and shoulders pose. Signed in bold dark ink to a clear area of the photograph, also dated 1906 in his hand. Bearing the photographer´s imprint to the lower mount, and also to the verso with the attractive imprint of Pasetti, Saint Petersbourg, photographer of the Imperial Russian Court. Overall age wear, particularly to the borders, with small staining, otherwise G £200-300
FEODOROVNA ALEXANDRA: (1872-1918) Alix of Hesse. Empress Consort of Russia 1894-1917, wife of Tsar Nicholas II. The last Tsarina of Russia, known for her notorious friendship with the Russian mystic Rasputin. An excellent set of two documents comprising a 4 x 6.5 cabinet photograph of the Empress, photograph by Pasetti in St. Petersburg, with two annotations in her hand, most probably addressed to the photographer, indicating the changes she expects on this photograph. At the base of the image, to the white lower border and beneath her printed name in Cyrillic, Alexandra Feodorovna annotates `à refaire´ in French, ("to redo"), and to the upper left corner she adds ` 2 Col´. To the upper left corner, in another hand, annotated `Enlevez l´ombre´, "take off the shadow". Bearing to the verso the A. Pasetti printed logo, including a list of Royalty family members they are photographers of, such as the Saxe Meiningen court or the Queen of Greece, Grand Dukes and Grand Duchesses, etc.. Together with an A.N.S., `Alexandra´, to her personal 3.5 x 2.5 card, in Frencg, bearing to the left border a Royal gilt crown embossed, above her gilt embossed name, Alexandra, in capital Cyrillic letters. The Empress sends a warm message `Avec mes felicitations de coeur´, Alexandra´, also dated in her hand, 7th March 1913. Matted in purple, attractively framed in gilt wood, richly ornated and glazed to an overall size of 11 x 16.5. The framing shows to the verso, also glazed, the verso of the photograph and the card. RUBINSTEIN ANTON: (1829-1894) Russian Pianist, Composer and Conductor. A good and scarce signed 4 x 6 cabinet photograph `A.G.Rubinstein´, in Cyrillic, the 1893 E.Rieber image depicting the Russian composer and piano virtuoso in a formal head and shoulders pose. Signed in bold black ink to the lower white border, with small ink stain to the initial letter and flourish. VG £600-900
HUGENBERG ALFRED: (1865-1951) German Politician and Businessman, a nationalist key figure in helping Hitler become Chancellor of Germany, who served in 1933 in the Fuhrer´s first cabinet. Signed 8vo card `Hugenberg´, in black ink, beneath a small printed photograph of Hugenberg affixed to the card, the image showing him in a head and shoulders pose. Dated in Berlin, 7th February 1933. SCHWERIN VON KROSIGK JOHANN: (1887-1977) German Minister of Finance 1932-45 in the Third Reich. Known as “Lutz” Graf Schwerin von Krosigk. In May 1945, after the suicides of Hitler and Goebbles he was the “De Facto” Chancellor of Germany. Schwerin von Krosigk and Wilhelm Frick were the only members of the Third Reich´s cabinet to serve continuously from Hitler's appointment as Chancellor until his death. Signed 8vo card `Graf Schwerin V.Krosigk´, in bold black ink, beneath a small printed photograph of Gurtner affixed to the card, the image showing him in a head and shoulders pose. Dated in Berlin, 26th August 1933. Accompanied by a T.L.S., one page, 4to, on the original “Reichsminister der Finanzen” printed stationery, to Walter Burri, in German. G £100-150

Shapiro portrait showing the Russian composer, wearing his military uniform, in a head and shoulders pose. Signed and inscribed in bold dark ink to a clear area of the image, in Cyrillic, and dated 1895 in his hand. Overall age wear, mostly to the edges, with pinholes to the borders, none affecting the signature. Together with Anton Rubistein (1829-1894) Russian Pianist, Composer and Conductor. Unsigned cabinet photograph of Rubinstein, the Atelier E. Bieber image of Hamburg showing the composer in a head and shoulders pose. Both photographs bearing the photographer´s imprint to the verso, and the Rubinstein´s one to the lower mount too. G, 2 £250-350
CHURCHILL WINSTON S.: (1874-1965) British Prime Minister 1940-45, 1951-55. Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1953. T.L.S., with his initial W, and with holograph subscription, one page, 8vo, Hyde Park Gate, London, 5th December 1959, to [Norman] Brook. Churchill announces 'I have been admiring the beautiful and original silver box which you gave me for my Birthday' and thanks his correspondent for their kind thought. Churchill further adds a holograph sentence at the conclusion, 'I treasure it greatly'. Annotated in pencil in an unidentified hand at the foot of the page indicating that the gift was a snuff box made by the Birmingham silversmiths Thropp & Taylor in 1810. VG £800-1000 Norman Brook (1902-1967) 1st Baron Normanbrook. British Civil Servant who served as Cabinet Secretary 1947-62 and head of the Home Civil Service 1956-62. Brook was one of the twelve pallbearers at Churchill's funeral in 1965.
