A George IV mahogany and studded leather chamber horse, early 19th century with a hand bar and turned supports, the rectangular section concertina seat with stiff springs within, on turned legs, bearing a brass trade label inscribed 'POCOCKS PATENT WAREHOUSE, SOUTHAMPTON HOUSE, 26 SOUTHAMPTON STRT, COVENT GARDEN, LONDON' 152 x 100 x 63cm (59 x 39 x 25in) Other Notes: Exercise chairs such as this were known as 'chamber horses' as they were designed to imitate the up-and-down motion of horseback riding. This peculiar exercise equipment was especially fashionable among the over-indulgent upper and middle classes, who would bounce up and down on the chair to burn off the effects of their rich diets. The 'rider' would sit on the seat and press down on the metal springs inside the bellows-like portion, which would then bounce the 'rider' back up again. This was regarded as excellent exercise and a cure for many ailments when one was not physically able to ride a horse. It was invented as early as 1740 by Henry Marsh of Clare Market and widely used throughout the 18th and early 19th centuries. It was so popular that a version was made as a nursery ride for the children of King George III and it could even be rented by the hour at apothecary shops for six cents an hour. It was notably illustrated in Thomas Sheraton's Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book in 1803. Similar examples can be found in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and in the National Trust Collection at Belton House, Lincolnshire. The leather is generally good with some dried out corners and small splits, the handle bar appears to be a replacement and the scroll bar supports show evidence of old repair.

They gained inspiration from the Dutch émigré cabinet makers employed by the Medici family, looking back in particular to well-regarded Leonardo van der Vinne (d.1713). The first octagonal table exhibited by the Falcini brothers at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence was purchased by Grand Duke Leopold II for his private collection. They exhibited at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851 to great acclaim. They specialised in the production of tables, most usually of octagonal form, using mother-of-pearl, ivory and stained fruitwoods to great effect.
