Chips/losses to the front right corner of the top. Slight veneer blistering to one side of the frieze. Some veneer damage directly above the frieze drawer lock and to the right side of the drawer at the top corner. Age cracks to the right side of the cabinet. Minor warping to the right door. Some shrinkage cracks to the door mouldings and further shrinkage around the door panels with some separation at the edges, particularly to the right side. Isolated blistering to one of the doors. Age cracks to both doors. Fading to the background of the chinoiserie decoration with some uneven areas of discolouration. A small area of damage to the top rear corner on the left side of the cabinet. The doors to the cabinet locked. It is possible that a key may be present and has been hidden for safe keeping. The Queens Closet Opened offered readers a rare glimpse into the domestic secrets of royalty, specifically the unpopular French widow of the executed King. The title would have resonated with contemporary readers as a reference to the scandalous publication of the King and Queen's private letters in 1645 titled The King's Cabinet Opened.
