A Victorian games compendium "The Royal Cabinet of Games" by Asprey & Son, containing bone chess set, draughts, dice, dominoes, chips, horse racing game with lead horses, cards etc, the amboyna case with Gothic style brass mounts set with onyx cabochons, width 33cm, depth 22.5cm & height 19.5cm. Condition - there're some minor losses of veneer, mostly to the base, one of the agate cabochons is chipped, one chess pawn broken (piece missing), three non matching draughts pieces, general wear throughout, brass mount lifting slightly to right front.

GEORGE III A Flight Barr and Barr (Worcester) twin-handled cabinet cup and saucer, c.1815, the cup painted by Thomas Baxter with a profile portrait of the king in military uniform within an oval border of colourful jewelling, reserved on a deep blue ground with formal gilt design, script mark to the cup, printed to the saucer, the cup restored, 13.5cm. (2) This series of cabinet cups and saucers decorated by Baxter is well documented, with celebrated sitters being drawn from a wide background. Cf. Bonhams, 2nd June 2004, lot 342 for a similar example.
PRINCE REGENT A Nantgarw cabinet cup and saucer, c.1818-20, the large cup painted with a head and shoulders portrait of the future George IV after Sir Thomas Lawrence, depicted in a blue jacket pinned with the Garter Star, reserved on a pale blue ground with elaborate gilt foliate scrolls, the saucer with three panels of pink roses, 14.6cm. (2) Paper label for the Harry Sherman Nantgarw Porcelain Collection to the saucer.
ROBERT GIFFORD An octagonal pearlware nursery soup plate, c.1820-25, printed in blue with a standing bewigged figure with documents emerging from his bag, inscribed with three lines of verse, the rim moulded with florets, a rim crack and chip to the underside, 19.8cm. A drawing by George Cruikshank was the title page of William Hone's parody 'The House That Jack Built', published December 1819. With the vogue for illustrated verse satires and the fear of militarism following Wellington's inclusion in the Cabinet in 1818, reference is made to Gifford (who was Attorney General) referred to as the 'Public Informer'. NOVEMBER 1830 DEFEAT OF THE DUKE OF WELLINGTON'S GOVERNMENT A pearlware hexagonal lobed jug, c.1830, printed in green to two sides with a cartoon and speech bubbles depicting William IV sweeping away the Cabinet members, titled around the foot, the rim with vignettes of Fame, restored, 15.3cm. Against the backdrop of demand for reform and Tory intransigence, Wellington lost a vote of no confidence on 15th November 1830. The following day the King appointed Earl Grey as Prime Minister. This cartoon is after the satire by Heath published by S W Fores.
PARLIAMENTARY AND IRISH REFORM A teacup and saucer, c.1831, printed in purple with portraits named 'Hon E.G. Stanley' depicted holding a scroll inscribed 'Poor Ireland', and 'The Duke of Sussex' and 'Marquis of Anglesey', the cup with a banner inscribed 'Reform', all within wide borders of rose, shamrock and thistle, the saucer broken and restored, 14.8cm. (2) Edward Stanley (later Earl of Derby and Prime Minister) became Chief Secretary for Ireland on 29th November 1830 and a member of Grey's Whig Cabinet the following year. In perusing a number of coercive measures, he frequently came into conflict with the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Lord Anglesey at the time the Great Reform Bill was being debated in Parliament. Prince Augustus Frederick, Duke of Sussex was known for his liberal views, which included reform of Parliament and Catholic emancipation. Cf. John May, Victoria Remembered, pl.63.
A walnut bedside cabinet, with stage back and pair of panelled cupboard doors raised on cabriole legs. Height 83 cm, width 47 cm, depth 31 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The cabinet is in extremely good order. It is a very good colour and has no ring marks or significant scuffs or damage. There is no evidence of any repairs.
A William and Mary secretaire cabinet, the top half with two drawers above the secretaire cupboard, the base fitted with two frieze drawers and raised on cabriole legs with low stretchers and bun feet. Height 175 cm, width 113 cm, depth 49 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The secretaire is in generally good order. The cornice is a little loose and the left hand return moulding partially detached. The right hand return moulding has a small loss to the front right hand corner. The left hand side is in generally good condition but does have a patch to the front bottom corner. The colour match is fairly good but the join is visible. The right hand side has a full height stress fracture which is open but no movement. The pin plate that holds the fall front is loose on the right hand side and again there is a repair to the timber at this point. The drawers are all in generally good condition. The handles if not original go through the original handle holes. The centre cupboard door has some shrinkage and although it closes as it should and locks there is a gap on the left hand side. The lock is a later. The fall front does close and lock. There is some shrinkage and minor stress fractures which should be visible on our images. The writing surface is a little marked and stained. The base is structurally fairly sound with only minor movement. There are some repairs to the legs and the cross stretcher has sprung in the centre and has some extremity losses. The feet will be later replacements.
A Victorian inlaid walnut pier cabinet, with glazed door opening to plush lined shelves and raised on a plinth. Height 96 cm, width 76 cm, depth 38.5 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The cabinet is in generally very good condition. The top is flat and unmarked. The frieze is in good condition all round. There are no losses to the metalwork. The door is not warped and closes as it should, we have the lock and key. The cloth lining is a little faded and marked in places but in generally good order. The plinth base has some minor scuffs and nibbles as one would expect but no significant problems. The backboard is original. We can see no evidence of any woodworm.
A pair of mahogany bedside tables, each fitted with a drawer with brass knob handles and low shelf and all raised on tapered legs of square section. Height 64 cm, width 41 cm, depth 34 cm. CONDITION REPORT: Both tables are structurally sound and in generally very good order. There are no loose joints. The drawers run smoothly. One tabletop is almost pristine, the other showing some signs of use with very minor marks. The shelf on the first cabinet is in generally good order. The second cabinet has some minor old watermarks. There is no evidence of any woodworm.
A 19th century mahogany bedside cabinet, with panelled door and brass handle raised on moulded legs united by a low shelf. Height 77 cm, width 32.5 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The cabinet is structurally sound. There are no significant marks to the top only minor blemishes. The door closes as it should and is not warped. There are no repairs to the legs. The shelf is in good condition. There is no evidence of any woodworm.
A 19th century mahogany bedside cabinet, the single door with applied moulding and raised on tapered legs terminating in pad feet. Height 77 cm, width 34.5 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The cabinet is structurally sound. There is a 4 cm stress fracture to the top front left hand corner and a nail hole. The condition of the top is generally good with only very minor marks and some loss to the French polish. The door is not warped. There are no repairs to the legs and no evidence of any woodworm.
A George III mahogany chest of drawers, with moulded edge above four long graduated drawers with brass drop handles and pierced backplates and lock escutcheons and with cockbeading to each drawer front and all raised on bracket feet. Height 82 cm, width 84.5 cm, depth 47 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The height to the very top of the back is 129.5 cm. Maximum depth 40 cm. Maximum width actually 66 cm rather than 65 cm. the piece is structurally sound. The rear pediment has nibbles to the left hand carving. The top shelf has water damage and a veneer loss to the centre. The middle tier is in generally good order. All scroll supports are in good condition. The quarter veneered section of the top of the main cabinet has some polish damage and minor nibbles to the veneers. There are some surface scratches and scuffs. The doors close as they should. They are not warped. The sides of the piece are not cracked. The legs are original as are the castors. The back panel is original and in good order.
A pair of Edwardian mahogany two drawer bedside chests, with circular handles and brass lock escutcheons. Height 65 cm, width 40 cm, depth 38 cm. CONDITION REPORT: Both cabinets are structurally sound and in generally good condition. The tops are both fairly clean with only minor marks. The drawer fronts are in good order with no missing cockbeading. The cabinet sides do have vertical stress fractures but there is no movement and no significant gaps. The bracket feet are all in good order as are the original backboards. There is no evidence of any woodworm.
