An unusual porcelain-mounted Cabinet, early 20th century, comprising four drawers with roundels of flowers above three pairs of drawers decorated with more iron-red and gilt roundels on a red diaper ground, the carcass in black and gold lacquer below an asymmetrical arrangement of shelves, all on a tall-legged stand, 80cm wide 41.5cm deep 131cm high CONDITION REPORT: Chips to lacquer work throughout.
An Edwards & Roberts inlaid mahogany drawing-room cabinet, serpentine-shaped, central arched recess rare with boxwood and sycamore curtains, a cupboard to each side, single frieze drawer, the whole finely inlaid with playful children, instruments, flowers and ribbons in boxwood and sycamore, on square tapering legs with inlaid, braced undertier, maker`s stamp to drawer, label attached at rear, 2ft. 4in. ALEXANDRA OF DENMARK: (1844-1925) Queen of the United Kingdom 1901-10, consort of King Edward VII. A.L.S., Alexandra, four pages, 8vo, n.p., 27th January 1891, to 'My dear Lepal', with an unusual red seal monogram in the upper left corner. The Princess apologises for not having thanked her correspondent for a little silver cabinet before now, explaining that she has had so much to do lately that it has been impossible for her to get through her correspondence. She adds that she hopes to see her correspondent soon and asks that they accept a little bag of chocolate. In a postscript the Princess further remarks 'You will be sorry to hear that poor “Aunt” Charlotte had a bad fall on the ice on the back of her head & has been suffering from the effects of it. She is not allowed to read nor write yet but is getting better slowly.' VG
DEVONSHIRE DUKE OF: (1720-1764) British Prime Minister 1756-57. A fine, extremely rare D.S., Devonshire, one page, folio, n.p., 22nd January 1761. The manuscript document is addressed to Mrs. Jane Kein, Housekeeper and Wardrobe Keeper of Kensington Palace, and instructs her to deliver to the Earl of Rochford, Groom of the Stole, the bed and furniture of the Private Bed Chamber at Kensington where King George II died, detailing the property 'The crimson Damask Bed with everything thereunto belonging, the crimson Damask Hangings, Window Curtains, Settees, Easy Chair with Cushion, Stools and Lustring Cases, the Chimney Glasses, hanging Glasses, Carved and Gilt Table, and pair of Stands, the India Japann'd Cabinet and Gilt Frame, Night Table, Fire Screen, Cane Chair and the two Clocks, all the Furniture belonging to the said Room'. With blank integral leaf (some neat splitting at folds). A document of unusual content. VG King George II had died on 25th October 1760. William Nassau de Zuylestein (1717-1781) 4th Earl of Rochford. British Courtier, Diplomat & Statesman. Groom of the Stole to King George II 1755-60. The Duke of Devonshire served as Lord Chamberlain from 1757-62.
TIRPITZ ALFRED VON: (1849-1930) German Grand Admiral of World War I. T.L.S., v. Tirpitz, with two lines of holograph text, one page, 4to, Berlin, 30th November 1926, to Herr von Schack, Master of the Horse, Estates Manager to the Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, in German. Tirpitz explains the delay in replying to his correspondent's letter, as he was moving to Berlin, and asks for his respectful thanks be given to his Royal Highness for their kind invitation to Coburg on 18th January 1927, commenting 'Since I cannot at the moment foresee how I shall be placed, I should like to be allowed one or two weeks before giving a definite promise.'
