Royal Engineers Attributed Victorian Officer’s Sword and Court Sword Mounted into a Period Display Case. A magnificent example of the 1857 Pattern by Henry Wilkinson, with extremely fine slightly curved fullered blade (No.5280, indicating 1854) bearing foliate decoration, VR cypher, Thunderbolt and crest and motto of the Grant family. Hilt with gilt-brass scroll pattern guard, black shagreen grip with gilt wire binding, and chequered pommel. Housed in its gilt-brass scabbard with white metal shoe ... Together with a Civil Uniform sword with regulation cast beaded metal hilt, the point of the blade now seized in the chape of its black leather scabbard ... and a Staff Officer’s gold and red flecked aiguillette. All mounted into a 19th Century glazed mahogany wall hanging display cabinet with hinged lid. (3 items) This sword is almost certainly that of Lieutenant (later Lieutenant General Sir) Robert Grant, who was educated at Harrow and RMA Woolwich before being commissioned into the Royal Engineers in 1854. He held a number of appointments, including that of Chief Engineer in the 1885 Sudan Expedition, becoming Inspector General of Fortifications in 1891. The relative dates of the blade and hilt of this sword indicate that Grant must have had the weapon re-hilted in or after 1857 to conform to the new pattern of hilt.

AN ENGLISH WALNUT DOUBLE GATE LEG TABLE DESIGNED AND MADE BY SIDNEY BARNSLEY the top with gouged ends and dovetailed^ the trestles pierced with a hand hole and united by a chamfered double stretcher^ 72cm h; 76 x 82.5cm^ with printed depository label of E E Lapworth & Sons Aylestone Road Leicester^ inscribed MESSRS HARRISON MURRAY^ c1900 Provenance: Mentor Gimson (1851-1925) thence by descent to the present vendor. Made at the Pinbury Workshop or shortly after Gimson and the Barnsleys had set up the Daneway Workshop at Sapperton in 1902. Sidney Barnsley showed an oak version of the present table at the Arts & Crafts Exhibition in 1896. The originality of the design received a favourable review in The Cabinet Maker and Art Furnisher. |... the designer was eminently proud of its primitive character. The prominent and well-cut dovetails^ the hand-hole for lifting^ and the compact appearance when closed^ are all good points. Of course^ it is our old friend the ~Sutherland Table~ over again^ but revived in light oak with a touch of Gothic in its toes and construction. All these elements are salutary^ and the table deserves a position of honour| (vol XVII^ Nov 1896^ p115). The table was purchased from the exhibition in London by C H St John Hornby and was Barnsley~s first professional sale (Greensted^ op cit fig 51 and p86). ++The feet stained^ presumably from having been long stood on a stone flagged floor washed down by a mop. A number of old blackened stains and water splashes around the lower part but complete and retaining the original six brass hinges with some minor surface corrosion^ lower part of one of the four hinged legs broken off and restuck. Top with a few old scratches and marks including one small scorch mark in the centre
