Derbyshire History/Medical Interest - a Victorian cabinet photograph, showing a lady with 'Derbyshire Neck', taken by Seaman & Sons, Chesterfield, Ilkeston & Alfreton Also known as goitre, this condition was a swelling of the thyroid gland caused by a lack of iodine. The condition was recorded as far back as 1789 when it was noted by J Pilkington in his A View of the Present State of Derbyshire
