A Victorian satin birch bookcase cabinet . Top section lacking several shelf supports. Remains of some sticky plastic covering to the interior. One door panel appears to have shrunk slightly. Minor chipping to the base. Lower section with ring and other staining to the front of top. Horizontal crack across top. Frame cracks to the sides. Significant stain to the front of lower drawer. General signs of wear commensurate with age and use. 106cm wide by 49cm deep by 230cm high.

Mechanical Devices.- Grollier de Serviere (Gaspard) Recueil d'Ouvrages Curieux de Mathematique et de Mecanique, ou Description du Cabinet..., first edition, title in red and black with woodcut device, dedication with engraved coat-of-arms and initial, woodcut ornaments and initials, 85 engraved plates numbered to LXXXVIII (plates XXXIX, XLVIII & LXXVI not issued), errata leaf at end, title a little soiled and water-stained at inner margin, marginal tear to dedication, a few plates lightly browned, engraved bookplate of Bryan Faussett, contemporary calf, worn, rebacked preserving part of gilt spine, [Berlin Kat. 1784], 4to, Lyons, David Forey, 1719.⁂ A description of the collection of mechanical instruments formed, and predominantly made, by the author's grandfather, Nicolas Grollier de Serviere (1593-1686). He was a mirror-maker and descendant of Jean Grolier the bibliophile. The collection included clocks, bridges, locks, water-raising devices, mills, military engines, a revolving bookcase, wheelchair etc.
