Three: Gunner’s Mate John Farrell, Royal Navy, later Chief Boatman in the Coast Guard china 1857-60, no clasp, unnamed as issued; New Zealand 1845-66, reverse dated 1863 to 1864 (John Farrell, Gr’s Mate, H.M.S. Esk) officially impressed naming; Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., V.R., narrow suspension (J. Farrell, Chf. Boatn. H.M. Coast Guard) impressed naming, together with his Naval officer’s sword by Stillwell & Sons, complete with leather scabbard, and sepia cabinet portrait photograph by Russell of Kirkwall of Farrell in uniform wearing medals, contact marks, otherwise toned, good very fine (4) £700-900 farrell's New Zealand War medal was issued on 2 January 1871. 119 medals (16 to R.N. officers, 79 to R.N. ratings, one to R.M. officer, and 23 to R.M. N.C.Os. and men) were issued to H.M.S. Esk for the Second New Zealand War, of which 48 are known including 4 with reverses undated (all to R.N. ratings) and the rest with reverses dated 1863-1864. john Farrell was born in 1820 at Bandon, Cork. His earlier service records have not been sought but his later record is annotated for earlier service ‘Traced 89/116’. He served in the Coast Guard as Commissioned Boatman, Trained Man, from 1 January 1873 on the Audacious, Newcastle, Endymion, Iron Duke, Endymion again, and finally the Audacious again from which he was Shore Pensioned on 22 March 1881. His record is additionally annotated ‘Traced P 14.10.1879’ and ‘Traced, Civil Superannuitant’. £700-£900
A pair of early 19th century Egyptian Revival giltwood console tables inscribed Chenou, Paris each with a ledge back depicting a relief of a pharaoh flanked by crocodiles and stiff leaf capitals and a rectangular rouge marble top above a frieze of hieroglyphs and animal symbols, including alligators, hyenas, scarabs, birds and scorpions, held aloft by a winged sphinx formed in green patinated composition and incised with the maker's name behind the shoulder, the lower portions comprising mirror backs within reeded giltwood frames, on plinth bases (2) 99cm wide, 106cm high, 46cm deep Note: The design of the sphinx closely recalls that used in the trade label of William Bullock (illustrated in Clive Wainwright, George Bullock -Cabinet Maker, 1988, p.42, fig.13).
A Regency period mahogany sofa table After designs by Thomas Hope and Sheraton the rounded rectangular top with reeded edge above three frieze drawers with brass lion mask handles opposed by simulated drawers, on reeded and stiff acanthus carved cross frame end standards and sinuous carved legs headed by leaf paterae and ending in forward facing gilt brass lion paw feet, united by a lotus carved pole stretcher 86cm wide (126cm flaps up), 73cm high, 66cm deep The cross frame leg design is featured in the work of Sheraton and Hope (who favoured Egyptianesque elements and monopaedic lion supports) and found in the cabinet work of Morel & Hughes, and Marsh & Tatham, Cf. A 19th century Japanese black and gilt lacquer cabinet on stand the two panelled cupboard doors decorated with figures and buildings in landscapes, enclosing an architectural balconied interior, with galleried shelves, drawers and doors, on British stand with pierced fretwork frieze and triple cluster column legs, scrolled spandrels, on chamfered block feet 91cm wide, 160cm high, 55cm deep
A fine 19th century mahogany, tulipwood parquetry and ormolu mounted cylinder desk By Edwards & Roberts the rectangular top with pierced gilt metal gallery above a cylinder fall decorated with a ribbon-tied marquetry musical trophy, releasing a writing slide with tooled leather inset and enclosing four short drawers around a shelved centre, similarly embellished with satinwood crossbanding and parquetry, the shaped frieze with a central button release drawer, mounted with a plaquette depicting a procession of Bacchanalian cherubs, flanked by two short drawers with bold rococo cast escutcheons applied with finely chased flower-filled baskets flanked by acanthus scrolls, each side with further plaquettes cast with cherubs allegorising the Arts of Sculpture and Painting, the frieze drawer stamped 'EDWARDS & ROBERTS', and with an internal label: 'Edwards and Roberts, Wardour St., 126 Piccadilly, 532 Oxford St., London' , the whole framed by rope twist, foliate cast, corrugated and beaded mounts and decorated with line inlay, on square tapering legs ending in stiff leaf cast sabots 122cm wide, 109cm high, 62cm deep Provenance: originally consigned from a country house in the Scottish Borders to Phillips Auctioneers in Edinburgh during the late 1980s, where it was purchased at auction by the current owner. The firm of Edwards & Roberts was noted for the exacting standards it brought to a wide range of furniture. Notwithstanding the firm's own high standards, this desk could be regarded as being of 'exhibition quality', drawing its inspiration from the virtuoso work of 18th century French cabinet makers, and particularly, the designs of Jean-Henri Riesener.

A late 19th French mahogany and gilt bronze mounted hanging display cabinet the surmount consisting of the Royal Arms of France with seated cherubs to either side, below is a stepped moulded cornice with lotus leaf and egg and dart gilt mouldings, the gilt moulded glazed door enclosing three glass display shelves, the waisted apron with a foliate scroll and pine cone gilt bronze mount, rear with inset hanging mounts 47cm wide, 87cm high, 12cm deep Note: This unusual high quality cabinet is a 19th century copy of an original by J.H. Riesener currently in the Musee de Versailles, made to contain Louis XVI's collection of watches.
