A rare ebonised and engraved silver foil cabinet-on-stand, 17th century and later with cushion frieze drawer, an arrangement of ten variously sized drawers and further cushion drawer all with silver foil panels elaborately engraved with winged cherubs, beasts, foliage and landscapes with twist-turned and foliate-carved legs with bun feet joined by a flat “X”-stretcher, 168cm. high x 104cm. wide. * Provenance: Anon Sale Christies London, 14 November 2002. Exhibited: London, Royal Academy of Arts, 'The Age of Charles II' Winter Exhibition 1960/61, No. 447. Note: The decoration is a late example of the kind of Japanning described as 'China Worke' in the Earl of Northampton's inventory of 1614 and seen on the well known ballot box in the possession of the Sadler's Company and on two cabinets in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
