A Japanese Edo period (18th/19th Century) black lacquered brass-bound table cabinet, the pair of panelled doors decorated with gilt landscapes, fitted ornate lockplates and strap hinges with nashiji ground border, a fitted interior of two long and four short drawers, with one deep drawer fitted a small side mounted lock, decorated with gilt painted flowers and sprays and original brass handles, the sides fitted brass carrying handles and also decorated with painted floral sprays, raised on a cut-away plinth base, 24 1/2 x 14 1/4 x 20 1/2in. high. PROVENANCE Rev. Joseph Sikes (died 1857), Chauntry House, Newark. Included in an Auction of the contents in April 1885 on the instruction of Francis Webster Esq., Lot 1744. Purchased by a descendant of Joseph Sikes and thence through the Wallis Family.
A mahogany and brass bound pedestal desk, with inset leather writing surface and breakfront, decorated with moulded brass border, a single drawer above the kneehole bearing a trade label of 'Druce & Co., Upholsterers and Cabinet Makers, Baker Street, London', each pedestal fitted four short drawers with angular brass handles, the whole inlaid with brass stringing and borders, raised on tapering feet and castors, 48 x 25 3/4 x 28in. high.
