The case, with its traditional dovetailed joints, was copied from an early example thought to have been cased by Edison Bell before the Edison Excelsior was imported. The machine has been exhibited for many years as part of Ron Armstrong’s display at steam rallies.

The bus along the Karakorum Highway between Kashgar in western China and Sust in northern Pakistan stops overnight at Tashkurgan. The Tajik women there all wore embroidered caps and I decided to stay and investigate them. They were thickly padded for the winter and the local museum even sold me one from their display cabinet. But it was all a big mistake. No bus was allowed to take me on as I wasn't on their manifest and it was only thanks to some friendly Pakistanis - and the fact that it was my sixty-fifth birthday that I was allowed on the next day's bus. Other Tajik embroideries I bought at Urgut market in Uzbekistan, as it's very close to the border with Tajikistan. Then others were from dealers in Bukhara when I spent three weeks there in 2003, and tried to sort out work from Surkhandaria and from nearby Tajikistan.
