A German Gothic 15th century style carved oak cabinet, circa 1900, the moulded top above two cupboard doors profusely carved with gothic tracery and bound with iron strap hinges above a chip carved apron raised on moulded sleigh feet129.5 x 94 x 46.5cmHistoric archival records show that a near-identical cupboard was held at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, in the late 19th and early 20th century, under the inventory number ‘43-1870’. Although the cabinet was described in an 1874 text (Ancient and Modern Furniture & Woodwork in the South Kensington Museum, pp.64-65), as ‘original’, it was subsequently accused of having been ‘deplorably tampered with’, by Fred Roe, in his 1905 publication ‘Old Oak Furniture’. In June 1938, the piece was deaccessioned following a Board of Survey assessment, due to the later ‘spurious’ carving on the original carcase.It is believed that the present lot is a later copy of that held in the V&A, possibly having been commissioned by the benefactors of the original cupboard.

The pair of cabinet doors concealing an interior of nine drawers and internal doors that conceal three further drawers, the cornice topped with two finials, on a later red painted stand, 96.5cm wide x 50cm deep x 164cm highOverall wear consistent with age and use. With a large crack in the left cabinet door. Further cracks throughout. With numerous losses to the sides. Some losses to the cabinet doors. The upper and lower cornice are loose. Would benefit from a cleaning.

Cased Noritake porcelain tea setcomprising of six cabinet teacups and saucers, decorated with Arabian scenes and gilt painted highlights, marks to the base of each, each saucer measures 12.5cm acrossOverall good condition with minimal signs of display wear and use. The box has some scuffs, one of the clasps are broken, some scuffs to the exterior. Slight discolouration and some stains in places, otherwise seems ok.

As well as now being placed on an associated Charles II silvered stand, the cabinet has also had its hinges and escutcheon plate replaced since the sale in 1921. Archduke Ludwig Viktor of Austria (1842-1919) was the youngest child of Archduke Franz Karl of Austria and, unlike his siblings, favoured artistic endeavours over a career in politics. He was well-known for his art collection and patronage. After his death, his collection was sold at auction between 1921 and 1922. The auction, held at Dorotheum in Vienna, lasted more than 54 days with over 7,000 lots available.Schloss Klessheim is a Baroque palace located in Wals-Siezenheim, near Salzburg, Austria. The palace was designed and constructed by Austrian architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach for Prince-Archbishop Johann Ernst von Thun in 1700. After Salzburg's secularisation in 1803, Schloss Klessheim went to the Austrian House of Habsburg-Lorraine. He was commonly referred to as Scholar Zhang. The son of a cabinet minister of the court, he suffered the tragedy of losing both parents. This left him with only his sword and his books for solace and entertainment. Thus, he decided to sit for civil-service examinations. In Episode 2 of the play, he set off on horseback to the capital with his pageboy. The scene (in fig. 17 and 19) depicts the moment when they approached the district of Pudong on the west bank of the Yellow River, in the territory of the Hezhong Prefecture (å¼ ç”Ÿè‡³è’²ä¸œ). (link)
