Original vintage war propaganda poster published by the Parliamentary Recruiting Committee in 1916, the same year as the Battle of the Somme in the First World War. The Military Service Act 1916 saw the first introduction of conscription. Unmarried men aged between 18 and 41 had to join the armed forces unless they were unfit or worked in an important job. Men who opposed the war – Conscientious Objectors – had to attend a tribunal. The poster features text in varying sizes printed in a navy colour. The Bill which became the Act was introduced by Prime Minister H. H. Asquith in January 1916. It came into force on 2 March 1916. Previously the British Government had relied on voluntary enlistment, and latterly a kind of moral conscription called the Derby Scheme. The conscription issue divided the Liberal Party including the Cabinet. Sir John Simon resigned as Home Secretary and attacked the government in his resignation speech in the House of Commons, where 35 Liberals voted against the bill, alongside 13 Labour MPs and 59 Irish Nationalists. Condition: Good condition, folds, light creasing, light staining.. Country of printing: UK, designer: Unknown, size (cm): 101x63, year of printing: 1916.

Rüdesheim am Rhein is a town in the Rhine Valley, Germany. It’s known for winemaking, especially of Riesling wines. In the center, Drosselgasse is a lane lined with shops, taverns and restaurants. Nearby, Siegfried’s Mechanical Music Cabinet is a museum of automated musical instruments. Medieval Brömserburg Castle is home to the Rheingau Wine Museum, exhibiting wine paraphernalia from ancient times to the present. Condition: Good condition, creasing, staining, foxing.. Country of printing: Germany, designer: Ernest Bekker, size (cm): 83x59, year of printing: 1970.
