Full title: A Chinese famille rose 'Xi Xiang Ji' plate depicting Zhang Junrui leaving for the capital, YongzhengDescription:Dia.: 22,5 cm Ref.: Tutuhaoyi, where Dr Yibin Ni writes: Young scholar Zhang Junrui (å¼ å›ç‘ž, also called Zhang Sheng 张生) is the male protagonist in the famous ancient Chinese play, Romance of the Western Chamber (西厢记 Xixiang ji, alternative translation is The Story of the Western Wing). He was commonly referred to as Scholar Zhang. The son of a cabinet minister of the court, he suffered the tragedy of losing both parents. This left him with only his sword and his books for solace and entertainment. Thus, he decided to sit for civil-service examinations. In Episode 2 of the play, he set off on horseback to the capital with his pageboy. The scene (in fig. 17 and 19) depicts the moment when they approached the district of Pudong on the west bank of the Yellow River, in the territory of the Hezhong Prefecture (张生至蒲东). (link)

A GEORGE II MAHOGANY BUREAU BOOKCASEBY JOHN FRANKLIN, CIRCA 1750The fall opening to an arrangement of pigeon holes and drawers around a central cupboard door, the printed label titled 'John Franklin, Cabinet Maker and Upholsterer, the Sign of the Chair in Bell Court, Doctor's Common, London, Makes and Sells all Sorts of Chairs, Cabinets...'.205cm high, 95cm wide, 52cm deepA John Franklin is listed in 1803 as a subscriber to Thomas Sheraton's "Cabinet Dictionary", Dictionary of English Furniture Makers, 1660-1840, ed. by G. Beard and C. Gilbert, 1986, Leeds, p. 319. Considering the dates however, it is unlikely that this is actually the same individual responsible for the offered lot, which is dated circa 1750. It seems more likely that the John Franklin who made the present bureau bookcase is the one documented as working in the capacity of a 'turner' in 1730, in Upton, Buckinghamshire. It is then certainly conceivable that the latter moved to London after an initial period as a 'turner' to become a cabinet maker.(bifmo.history.ac.uk)Condition Report: Bookcase with the marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Old chips and splits. The putty to the inside of the glazed doors varies to some panes suggesting these are old replacements. All glass has good age and 'wave'. Interior of the fall front is well used. It has various dents, abrasions, and dark marks - see images. Small sections of inset timber around one of the fall hinges. Escutcheons and handles to lopers are old replacements. The locks and the handles to the drawers appear to be possibly original. There are keys present and operate all locks. Some of the locks are 'sticky'. Later blocks to the backs of the feet. One rear foot with repairs - see images. Some old moulding repairs. Some splits to bottoms of drawers. Minor evidence of old worm. Please refer to additional images for visual reference to condition.Condition Report Disclaimer

Y A FLEMISH EBONY, TORTOISESHELL AND POLYCHROME PAINTED CABINET ON STANDLATE 17TH CENTURY, THE EBONISED STAND LATERThe interior door and drawer fronts painted in oil on copper in the manner of Rubens with classical figures in landscapes biblical and mythological scenes171cm high, 110cm wide, 50.5cm deepProvenance: Woodleys, Woodstock, OxfordshireThe grade II listed house of largely mid-late Georgian construction was originally built as a farmhouse in the 1780s and twice extended following its changes of ownership in the 1820s and 1880s. These additions resulted in the 12,800 sq. ft house comprising some 40 rooms, including 13 bedrooms. Its handsome south and east façades offer a spectacular view of the principal façade of Blenheim Palace a mere two miles to the South East beyond the noted Column of Victory. The painted panels decorating the inside of the cabinet are by an anonymous Antwerp hand (or hands), copying well known scenes by Sir Peter Paul Rubens and other Flemish masters. Depicted on the left door is a copy after Rubens' and Jan Brueghel the Elder's Diana and her Nymphs Leaving for the Hunt in the collection of Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature in Paris. This scene is complimented on the inside of the right door with Diana and her Nymphs Resting after the Hunt, again after an original by Rubens. The central section is decorated with smaller mythological scenes from Ovid's Metamorphoses as well as one Biblical scene from the Old Testament: Pan and Syrinx; Latona and the Lycian fishermen; The Rape of Europa; The Daughters of Cecrops finding Erichtonius (top to bottom, left hand drawers); Narcissus at the Well; Meleager and Atalanta; Pyramus and Thisbe; and Lot and his family fleeing Sodom (top to bottom, right hand drawers). In the middle section one finds Apollo and Daphne as well as a depiction of Mercury and Herse after a work by Guillaume Forchondt, who was a maker of cabinets himself and led the Forchondt firm in Antwerp from 1636.
