Lord Scone`s `Cabinet of Curiosities` An interesting and curious collection that came from Scone Palace, Perthshire (the ancient site of the `Stone of Scone`) and was assembled between 1840 and 1900. This fascinating collection comprises the following objects: a grape shot mounted on a circular marble base labelled` marble from the chimney piece of the Governor`s house in Sevastopol`; a fragment of wood labelled, `a piece of wood dug up near the Malakoff (Crimea)`; a piece of marble from Maupika (Crimea); a pen rest made of two stags horns with three quill pens; a meerschaum pipe in the form of a bird`s head, the case labelled P. Edwards and Co.; a Victorian infants silk glove with a label saying, `glove worn by Margaret Macgregor (afterwards Countess Mansfield) when a baby`; an Australian aboriginal stone hand axe and an Australian aboriginal grinding stone both with labels, `found in a mound at Wangery District of Victoria, 1891, Warambool Public Museum`, together with a letter from Hawksdale dated 30th December 1891 describing where the objects were found; an interesting paper scroll on which is the rare photographic record of Lord Scone`s late nineteenth century expedition to the North Pole with a printed label reading,` I have just returned from the North Pole and I send a bit of it with my photographs`. This collection was auctioned at Christies King Street in May 2007 by permission of the 7th Earl of Mansfield.

Un “Trombe”, ou l’autre machin où on tire serait bien », avec dessin à la plume du « machin » en question...

L.S., Paris 3 août 1867, à son collègue le sénateur Larabit ; 6 pages in-8 à en-tête du Cabinet du Grand Chancelier. Récit de l’altercation entre Davout et Flahaut, avant la deuxième abdication de Napoléon. [En juin 1815, Davout s’adressa à Flahaut, alors très en faveur auprès de l’Empereur, pour qu’il obtienne de ce dernier un départ prochain. Une discussion très vive s’éleva entre les deux hommes. Flahaut rétablit ici cette scène, souvent déformée par les historiens.] Il le félicite du discours qu’il a prononcé à l’inauguration de la statue du maréchal Davout à Auxerre : « On ne saurait louer, en termes plus justes et plus dignes, la mémoire d’un homme, qui a rendu de si éclatants services à l’Empereur et au pays »... Il regrette toutefois que, reprenant l’anecdote de son altercation avec le maréchal publiée par Fleury de Chaboulon, il ait placé la scène dans le cabinet de l’Empereur, sans témoin, « tandis qu’elle a eu lieu dans le cabinet du gouvernement provisoire, en présence de tous les membres, de plusieurs ministres », etc. Il relate alors les faits tels qu’ils se sont déroulés... L’Empereur se trouvait alors à Malmaison, « d’où il m’avait envoyé pour demander au gouvernement un ordre aux commandants des frégates alors à Cherbourg de se mettre à sa disposition et m’avoit chargé de lui déclarer qu’il ne quitterait les environs de Paris que lorsqu’on le lui auroit envoyé. Je venais de faire cette déclaration au duc d’Otrante, lorsque le Maréchal Davout, qui était debout près de la cheminée, prit la parole sans que quoi que ce soit l’y obligeât et s’adressant à moi, me dit : Général, rendez-vous auprès de l’Empereur et dites lui qu’il parte, que sa présence nous gêne et est un obstacle à toute espèce d’arrangement et que le salut des pays exige son départ : sans quoi nous serons obligés de le faire arrêter, que je l’arrêterai moi-même »... Consterné, Flahaut répondit sur le champ : « Il n’y a que celui qui donne un pareil message qui soit capable de le porter ; quant à moi je ne m’en charge pas et si pour vous désobéir, il faut donner sa démission, je vous donne la mienne »... Il se rendit ensuite auprès de l’Empereur qui devina que quelque chose s’était passé. Après que Flahaut lui eut tout raconté, « il porta la main à son cou en disant Eh bien, qu’il vienne »... Il ne tient pas à revenir sur ce triste épisode « car il m’en coûte de rien dire qui soit de nature à porter atteinte à une des gloires de la France, mais seulement je ne peux pas consentir à ce que l’on nie ce qui n’est malheureusement que trop vrai »...
