Vintage signed cabinet photograph, the oval image depicting the young Crown Prince in a formal half length pose wearing a uniform with medals and sashes. Photograph by Rudolf Krziwanek of Vienna and Ischl. Signed ('Rudolf') in bold, dark fountain pen ink with his name alone beneath the image. Signed photographs of the Crown Prince are rare as a result of his death at the age of 30 in a suicide pact with his mistress, Baroness Mary Vetsera, the devastating consequences of which became known as the Mayerling Incident. CHURCHILL WINSTON S.: (1874-1965) British Prime Minister 1940-45, 1951-55. Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1953. T.L.S., Winston S. Churchill (a somewhat spidery signature), one page, 4to, Chartwell, Westerham, Kent, 7th July 1963, to Norman [Brook]. Churchill thanks his correspondent for their letter and states that he is pleased to know that Brook is much better, continuing 'We had an agreeable cruise. We expect to stay at Chartwell for the rest of the summer, and hope that you will both be able to come and stay with us soon'. VG Norman Brook (1902-1967) 1st Baron Normanbrook. British Civil Servant who served as Cabinet Secretary 1947-62, Joint Permanent Secretary to HM Treasury and head of the Home Civil Service 1956-62.
MAJOR JOHN: (1943- ) British Prime Minister 1990-97. An unusual collection of nine First Day Covers, each individually signed by John Major, all with identical colour images of the Prime Minister and his wife at the entrance to 10 Downing Street and commemorating the General Election of 1992, each cover is also signed by a member of Major’s Cabinet of April 1992 comprising Kenneth Clarke (Secretary of State for the Home Department), Michael Heseltine (Secretary of State for Trade and Industry), William Waldegrave (Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster), Michael Howard (Secretary of State for the Environment), David Hunt (Secretary of State for Wales), Norman Lamont (Chancellor of the Exchequer), John Gummer (Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries & Food), Malcolm Rifkind (Secretary of State for Defence) and Douglas Hurd (Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs). All are signed to clear areas by Major and the Cabinet members and each are neatly annotated in the hand of a collector to the lower edge. VG to EX, 9
CASTRO FIDEL: (1926- ) Cuban Prime Minister 1959-76 and President 1976- 2008. D.S., Fidel Castro Ruz, two pages, folio, Presidential Palace, Havana, 29th May 1959. The typed document, in Spanish, is issued in the name of Manuel Urrutia Lleo, President of Cuba, and authorises a decision sanctioned by the cabinet of the revolutionary government ('after the commotion caused by the overthrow of tyranny') that traditional carnivals be held in the cities of Santa Clara and Sancti Spiritus, and in Holguin and Guantanamo, 'with the enthusiasm and worthy brilliance in this year of liberation', and further ordering a sum of $60,000 be made available from the Ministry of Finance and to be divided between the mayors of the named cities as an economic contribution to hold the carnivals. Signed by Castro at the conclusion and with two countersignatures including that of Rufo Lopez-Fresquet, Minister of Finance, across blind embossed seals. With a further blind embossed blue paper seal affixed with two blue ribbons beneath the signatures. Also signed by both Castro and Lopez-Fresquet with their initials to the left margin of the first page. Three file holes and some light age wear to the left edge of each page, not affecting the text or signatures, otherwise VG
