A 19th Century Minton Cabinet Plate With Reticulated Border Antique plate with cobalt blue lattice border, interspersed with three floral posy vignettes; the centre, hand painted with floral posy design in blue, pink, yellow and green, the whole finished with gilt scroll trim. Impressed Minton mark to base, painted model number A5588 to base. Good condition, diameter approx 9.5 inches.
Lord Derby’s Statue Desk Weight, 1873 .Bronze. Cast with the Stanley family crest - On a chapeau gules turned up ermine an eagle, wings endorsed - and bearing an integral plaque inscribed ‘Metal of Lord Derby Statue. Cast 26th April 1873’. The present desk weight was produced from the residual metal used in the casting of the statue of the statesman and three-time Conservative Prime Minister, Edward Smith-Stanley, 14th Earl of Derby.The statue by Mathew Noble (1817-76) is located in Parliament Square, Westminster, and was unveiled on 11 July 1874. The unveiling ceremony was performed by the then prime minister Benjamin Disraeli and was attended by many members of the Lords and Commons and ‘a large number of ladies’. At the conclusion of his speech, following the unveiling, Disraeli said:“We have raised this statue to him not only as a memorial, but as an example; not merely to commemorate but to inspire.” The four sides of the granite pedestal bear bronze reliefs depicting Derby addressing the House of Commons during a debate on slavery, attending a Cabinet meeting, at a meeting of the Lancashire Relief Comitteee and at his inauguration as Chancellor of the University of Oxford. Measurements: 10.5cm (4.25in) x 6cm (2.5in).

ϒA pietre dure inset, gilt metal strung and ebony veneered softwood casket retailed by Tahan of Paris, circa 1875, of canted rectangular form, the hinged cover and front with floral panels in gilt metal reserves, the interior lined with rosewood, inscribed TAHAN Fourn’eur de l’Empereur to the lock, 11cm high, 20cm wide, 10cm deep CATALOGUE NOTES: Alphonse Tahan (1830 ~ 1880) was the official ébéniste de l'Empereur or master cabinet maker to Emperor Napoleon III and his wife, the Empress Eugénie. Known for her beauty and impeccable taste, the Empress Eugenie was viewed as a trend setter and very much favoured the productions of Tahan's workshop at 30 Rue de La Paix and subsequently at Boulevard des Italiens. The firm exhibited at The London Crystal Palace Exhibition in 1851 and the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1855, and on both occasions was awarded medals. Pierre-Alexandre Tahan continued the legacy of his father, and his business in Paris was celebrated for its imaginative, exhibition-quality work.
