A Swat Valley timber dowry chest of rectangular outline with panelled top, the front carved with leaf filled squares above pair of panels, one sliding revealing open recess, carved with roundels, the legs moulded and carved with turned finials, 79cm wide, 69cm high, late 19th / early 20th Century The Dowry Hand Carved Cabinet comes from the Swat Valley, a beautiful mountainous area of the Hindu Kush that straddles the Afghan / Pakistan Border. Most Families had one of these (of varying quality) and they were used for storing jewellery, clothes, a bride's dowry and even stocks of grain. The use of the adze rather than the plane indicates this is an earlier example, and is quite ornate compared to others in its use of chip hand carving. These Cabinets are now very hard to find and acquire as they come from a geographical area of civil unrest and warring factions.
