Sweeting was born in Bristol but spent much of his early life in London, having spent a number of years in the care system before being apprenticed as a cabinet maker. He made a career for himself in painting and picture restoration and was a member of the International Institute for Convervation of Historic Works of Art. In 1975 he relocated to North Wales and set up his own studio there. Sweeting was a founder member of the Federation of British Artists and regularly exhibited at the RBSA during the 1980s.
