AN IRISH GEORGE III MAHOGANY BREAKFRONT BOOKCASE, part of the original furnishings of Ely House, Dublin, the dentil moulded cornice above a four door bookcase, decorated with Gothic lancet glazing bars above fielded cupboard door base. 282cm high, 346cm wide Provenance: Collection of Fine Art Property of Dr. Thornley Stoker, Ely House, 8 Ely Place, Dublin, 8th November, 1910, lot 863 This handsome Chippendale pattern mahogany bookcase was lot 863 in one of the most spectacular house contents auctions Dublin has ever seen. Taking place in November 1910, it was that of Dr. Thornley Stoker whose fierce reputation has faded, but that of his brother Bram has only gone stratospheric thanks to his creation, “Dracula”. The sale of over 1600 lots represented a life-time of collecting. George Moore leaves a description of Sir Thornley hopping about the antique dealers in Grafton Street ‘Like an old magpie’ prying out spoons and forks. Moore, unsuccessfully, tries to persuade the grumpy old doctor to back Hugh Lanes project for a Modern Art Gallery in Dublin. Moore, a neighbour frequently visits Dr Stoker and well knows his fine collection housed in his palazzo, Ely House, but can’t resist retelling Dublin cynicism as to its genesis. “Up and down Liffey Street, lately, on the trail of a Sheraton sideboard and Naylor has been asked to keep it till an appendices should turn up; the Chinese Chippendale mirror over the drawing-room chimney piece originated in an unsuccessful operation for cancer; the Aubusson carpet in the back-drawing room represents a hernia; the Renaissance bronze on the landing a set of gall-stones; the Ming Cloisonné a floating kidney; the Buhl cabinet his opinion on an enlarged liver; and Lady Stokers jewels a series of small operations performed over a number of years”. Moore declares the collection will never be sold in his lifetime but on his death, there will be a great auction. This bookcase, filled with part of Dr. Stoker’s china collection is given a full-page illustration and is described as ‘Chippendale’. A bookcase of similar design, with the addition of a broken triangular pediment, c.1766, is illustrated in Gilbert, ‘The Life and Works of Thomas Chippendale’ (1978), p.41

A SET OF EIGHTEEN IRISH REGENCY MAHOGANY FRAMED DINING CHAIRS, by Mack, Williams & Gibton, stamped B7180, the curved rail backs with incised line decoration, and middle rail above padded seats, covered in oatmeal tweed cloth and raised on chamfered sabre legs. (16 single and 2 elbow chairs)Provenance: Supplied to Henry Bar, Ballindoolin HouseThe chairs each with a curved bar back and reeded cross rails above a stuff-over seat, raised on front sabre legs, sixteen marked B7180 and a pair of open carvers marked B7180 and all signed in ink M W G.Mack, Williams & Gibton, 39 Staford Street, Dublin (1812-29) was one of the most successful partnerships in the early nineteenth century. The firm received a royal appointment in 1806 as ‘Upholsterers & Cabinet Makers to his Majesty, His Excellency the Lord Lieutenant and His Majesty’s Board of Works’. The firm worked closely with the architect Francis Johnston, then architect to the Board of Works and supplied furnishings to Dublin Castle and the Vice Regal Lodge (now Aras an Uachterain) and other state buildings.Ballindoolin, built in circa 1822 for Humphry Bor, retained up to recently an important collection of furniture supplied by Mack, Williams & Gibton. The firm supplied fine furniture to many Irish country houses including Borris House, County Carlow, The Argory, County Armagh and Lissadell, County Sligo. Indeed the attractive gate lodge in Greek revival style has been attributed to Francis Johnston (O’ Byrne). The country house dining room underwent a change in interior style in the early nineteenth century with a taste for larger tables and chairs, ordered ensuite with sideboard, serving table and wine cooler. As the hour for serving dinner became established at a later hour it was eaten by candlelight and drama was further created with a fashion for darker colours, augmented by candlelight and silver reflecting in large mirrors. The dining room served an important role in a family’s social life and was a centre for mixed gender entertainment, with the ladies being asked to leave while the chaps got sozzled on port!

A pair of ‘eliptic card tables’ in rosewood with similarly reeded friezes was supplied by Trotter for Paxton House, Berwickshire in 1814 (F. Bamford, ‘A Dictionary of Edinburgh Furniture Makers 1600-1840’, Furniture History, 1983, pl. 61), while a rosewood display stand, also for Paxton, exhibits a similar profile with its four incurved supports beneath an elliptical top (pl. 58). One of William Trotter’s (1772-1833) most significant commissions was for Paxton House, an 18th Century Robert Adam country house near Berwick-upon-Tweed. JOHN FRANCIS (1780 - 1861)Queen Victoria wearing the Garter Star White Carrera marble raised on a circular socle. 70cm high x 50cm wideSigned John Francis was born in Lincolnshire in 1780, and brought up in a farming family, but showing some talent for the arts, was advised by friends to settle in London, where he became a pupil of Sir Francis Leggatt Chantrey. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1820 a bust of T. W. Coke, esq., and another of Captain Sir W. Bolton, R.N. In 1822 he sent to the same institution a bust of Miss Horatia Nelson. In 1844 he executed by command of her majesty a marble bust of his Royal Highness Prince Albert. A bust of Queen Victoria is now in the hall of the Reform Club while another is in the Royal Collection. The present work depicts the young Queen in a simple gown, and wearing the Garter Star. Among his other works are busts of the Duke and Duchess of Norfolk (1844); bust in bronze of the Duke of Sussex (1847); marble bust of Lord John Russell, now in the National Portrait Gallery (1848); a bronze medal of Eos, a favourite greyhound of Prince Albert (1848); bust of the Duke of Wellington, now in the National Portrait Gallery (1852); and a cabinet bust of the Right Hon. Albert POWER (1881 - 1945)Head of Terence McSwiney, Lord Mayor of Cork, in Brixton Prison, (1920)White marble, 32cm high, 26cm wideSigned and dated 1920Terence MacSwiney was born in Cork in 1879, son of John MacSwiney and Mary Wilkinson, and was one of eight children. In 1885, his father emigrated to Australia leaving Terence and the other children in the care of their mother and his eldest daughter.Terence was educated by the Christian Brothers in Cork city, but left at fifteen to become an accountancy clerk and continued his studies and matriculated successfully. He continued in full-time employment while he studied at the Royal University (now UCC), graduating in 1907.In 1901 he was a founding member of the Celtic Literary Society, and in 1908 he founded the Cork Dramatic Society with Daniel Corkery and wrote a number of plays for them. Described as a sensitive poet-intellectual, MacSwiney’s writings in the newspaper Irish Freedom brought him to the attention of the Irish Republican Brotherhood. He was one of the founders of the Cork Brigade of the Irish Volunteers in 1913, and was President of the Cork branch of Sinn Féin. Following the rising, he was interned under the Defence of the Realm Act in Reading and Wakefield Gaols and subsequently interned in Shrewsbury and Bromyard internment camps until his release in June 1917. It was during his exile in Bromyard that he married Muriel Murphy of the Cork distillery-owning family. In the 1918 general election, MacSwiney was returned unopposed to the first Dáil Éireann as Sinn Féin representative for Mid Cork, succeeding the Nationalist MP D. D. Sheehan. After the murder of his friend Tomás Mac Curtain, the Lord Mayor of Cork on 20 March 1920, MacSwiney was elected Lord Mayor. On 12 August 1920, he was arrested in Cork for possession of seditious articles and documents. He was summarily tried by court martial on 16 August and sentenced to two years’ imprisonment in Brixton Prison. In prison he immediately started a hunger strike, while eleven republican prisoners in Cork Jail went on hunger strike at the same time. On 26 August, the British cabinet stated that “the release of the Lord Mayor would have disastrous results in Ireland and would probably lead to a mutiny of both military and police in the south of Ireland.”Terence MacSwiney’s hunger strike gained world attention. The British government was threatened with a boycott of British goods by Americans, while four countries in South America appealed to the Pope to intervene. Protests were also held in Germany and France. Attempts at force-feeding MacSwiney were undertaken in the final days of his strike, but despite this he fell into a coma on 20 October 1920, and died five days later after 73 days on hunger strike. His body lay in St George’s Cathedral, Southwark in London where 30,000 people filed past it. Fearing large-scale demonstrations in Dublin, the authorities diverted his coffin directly to Cork, where his funeral attracted huge crowds. Terence MacSwiney is buried in the Republican plot in Saint Finbarr’s Cemetery in Cork. Arthur Griffith delivered the graveside oration. The present work was made after Albert Power’s visit to Terence MacSwiney in Brixton Jail as the Lord Mayor was dying. Power, whose name is synonymous with Irish nationalist sculpture, was born in Dublin and entered the stone carving profession as a young apprentice to the Smyth family. At 13, he began evening classes at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art where he picked up important figure-drawing and other fine art skills from William Orpen, and sculptors John Hughes and Oliver Sheppard. As a student he absorbed the ethos of the new ‘Irish art’ movement, not only through the school’s involvement with the Celtic Revival, but also through the wider mood of nationalism then prevalent. Amongst his many commissions were bronze busts of the new Irish President, Arthur Griffiths, and the army chief Michael Collins. He also completed death-masks for both men which were added to the Cenotaph on Leinster Lawn next to Dail Eireann. Power died in 1945 of complications following an accident in his studio.
